The Humphries’ lab interrogates how the joint activity of many neurons encodes the past, present, and future, in order to guide behaviour. We combine simulations of neural circuits with “neural data science” – the development and use of machine-learning approaches to systems neuroscience data. We are particularly interested in PhD projects on the following research questions:
“Mapping the wires from neural activity”. How to use the next generation of imaging techniques that directly record neuron voltages to accurately infer the wiring between neurons.
“How to write activity into neurons". What features of neural activity should we change with optogenetics in order to test hypotheses about population activity?
“Dynamic control of the striatum in health and disease”. How the influence of the striatal interneurons is controlled by dopamine, and how that influence goes haywire when dopamine is lost in Parkinson’s disease.

PhD positions are available for students interested in interdisciplinary research in the area of visual attention. Students will be able to work with neuroscience faculty at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman, MT on a collaborative project funded by a multi-site (Dartmouth, Brown, Montana State and the University of Nevada at Reno) NSF EPSCoR award to study the neural bases of visual attention. In this project we will explore how complex information is topographically organized in the brain using fMRI and state of the art analytical techniques, as well as computational approaches, and neuromodulation.
Excellent understanding of and experience with fMRI and data analysis is required. Strong programming skills (matlab, python, etc.) are also a requirement. Experience with data analysis techniques using MVPA and other multivariate approaches (e.g., Representation Similarity Analysis). Very good English (oral and written) communicative skills are necessary.
The position is for a maximum of 5 years, and will start in February 2019. The position involves no formal teaching (unless the candidate wants to). It does involve, however, lab mentoring.
The salary is extremely competitive – between 2200 and 2400 euros per month (dependent on experience), tax free (annual 26400-28800 euros tax free). This value is on par with the average salaries at top American institutions, as well as London, Paris, etc. However, the cost of living in Portugal (and particularly in Coimbra) is much lower. I am expanding my research group, which is located at the Center for Information and Language Processing at the University of Munich (LMU).
This is a postdoc level position and it currently has one year of full-time funding from my ERC Starting Grant.
Candidates will focus on cutting edge research into using deep learning techniques to solve machine translation (neural machine translation). The group is a well-known machine translation research group with strong interests in related natural language problems. The working language of the group is English, no knowledge of German is required. The three main focuses of the group are in neural machine translation: 1) domain adaptation 2) adding linguistic information to character NMT 3) unsupervised NMT.
Candidates will have possibilities to teach, supervise bachelors/masters students, and to collaborate on grant applications.
CIS has an active community working on cutting-edge natural language processing. There will be significant interaction with the research groups of Hinrich Schütze (deep learning and a variety of NLP problems) and Helmut Schmid (neural machine translation, parsing, tagging, morphology). In the first project we will determine whether the Mississippi delta is able to survive sea level rise. We will use the model Delft3D coupled to new remote sensing data collected by NASA. The second project explores the conversion of coastal forests to salt marsh triggered by sea level rise. The goal is to determine whether removal of trees will trigger an ecological shift to salt marsh vegetation. Our group is in charge of the hydrological component: we will install a suite of instruments to measure groundwater level and salinity, soil moisture, precipitation, light availability, etc., for 5-10 years.

The Research Fellow in Demography & Health will join a team of analysts in London to work on a 3-year research project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to estimate HIV incidence and mortality, and in the comparison of population-based estimates with those emanating from routinely collected data in health facilities.
The successful applicant must have a PhD in the relevant subject, including demography, medical statistics, epidemiology, or reproductive health (or equivalent working experience in these fields); expertise in the analysis of large and complex (longitudinal) datasets; proven ability to use statistical analysis software (preferably Stata or R); and strong quantitative skills, preferably in the area of demographic estimation. This full-time position is available as soon as possible for the duration of one year, with the possibility of further extension. Multiple Postdoctoral Positions @ University of Alabama
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Center for Complex Hydrosystems Research (CCHR) at the University of Alabama seek outstanding applicants for multiple postdoctoral scholar positions. The successful candidates will support hydrologic modeling at local, regional and continental scales, state-of-the art data assimilation, machine learning, flood and drought monitoring and forecasting, flood inundation modeling, and the use of soil moisture and snow remote sensing data for the above. It is expected that candidates have strong statistical and quantitative background, strong programming skills in Python or Matlab, good command in using Linux and data management, and strong skills in written and oral communication of research results.
It is highly desirable that candidates have competence in data intensive research, high performance (parallel) computing and deep learning. Working knowledge with models such as Noah-MP, WRF-Hydro/ National Water Model, and VIC is viewed favorably.
The post-docs will be expected to write scientific papers, technical reports and present research results, and assist in developing proposals for external funding. The positions provide great opportunities for research, education, and professional development. This is a fixed-term position with opportunities for annual renewal based on satisfactory performance.

Post-doc in NLP and ML at Macquarie University/Data61 in Sydney, Australia
The NLP/ML group in the Dept of Computing at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia is recruiting a post-doctoral researcher for a joint research project "Information Extraction and Parsing Methods for Government and Enterprise Applications" on information and relation extraction involving Macquarie University, CSIRO's Data61 and the University of Edinburgh. The project uses syntactic parsing and deep learning to extract "who did what to whom when" from a large corpus of texts. The research involves integrating information extracted from multiple texts and using this information in creative ways, e.g., building event time-lines for individuals, learning entailments between predicates and relations, etc.
The post-doc will report to Professor Mark Johnson in the Department of Computing, Macquarie University and Dr Stephen Wan of CSIRO's Data61, Marsfield, and will be collaborating with Professor Mark Steedman of Edinburgh University.
You will need to have a PhD and strong research record in NLP and ML, especially Deep Learning. You will need to show proficiency with Deep Learning toolkits such as TensorFlow and Pytorch.
