3 PhD students positions Design for changing values: energy systems, artificial intelligence and design strategies

Delft University of Technology offers three positions for PhD students as part of the research project Design for changing values: a theory of value change in sociotechnical systems. The entire project consists of 3 PhD positions and 2 postdoc positions and will be supervised by prof.dr.ir. Ibo van de Poel. A complete description of the project can be requested. The project aims at better understanding how moral values may change as a result of technological development and how we can better deal with such changing values in the design of new technology.


Each of the PhD positions focuses on one of the following more specific topics:

· Changing values and the design of energy systems

· Design for value change in robot systems and artificial intelligence

· Design strategies for value change in sociotechnical systems


Each of the projects involves empirical as well philosophical investigations into the phenomenon of value change and its implications for the design of sociotechnical systems. The first two projects focus on value change in a more specific domain (energy systems and artificial intelligence). The third project focuses on developing design strategies that better allow to deal with value change.


The candidate will carry out doctoral research which will lead to a dissertation, and will also produce relevant publications. The candidate will participate in the Graduate School of TU Delft and in PhD program of the 4TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology. Requirements

We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

• A master degree in philosophy, engineering or a relevant socio-scientific discipline, like STS (science and technology studies)

• A demonstrable interest in applied ethics and in technology

• It is recommended that the candidate has had experience in carrying out empirical research and has knowledge of the relevant technological domain studied in the PhD project

• Good analytical and reasoning skills, as demonstrated by, for example, a master thesis

• Willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team

• Ability to present his or her ideas clearly also to people with another disciplinary background

• Openness to criticism

• Productive and dedicated

• Good command of both written and spoken English

We aim to develop biomarkers that can quickly and reliably detect epileptogenic brain tissue in intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings of epilepsy patients. In particular, High-Frequency Oscillations (HFO) have been recently established as promising biomarkers to guide epilepsy surgery.

You will be responsible for the computational and theoretical aspects of the project, which aims to find the optimal algorithms for identifying the biomarkers. While a large body of data is already available, you will also participate in recordings of human iEEG and single neuron firing. Job description
This postdoctoral position is part of the research program The Formal Demography of Kinship and Family (FORMKIN), which is funded by a European Research Council Advanced Grant to Prof Hal Caswell. The overall goal of FORMKIN is to develop and apply a matrix analytic model for kinship demography, which will compute the kinship network implied by schedules of mortality and fertility. It will develop this theory at the levels of the individual, the cohort, and the population. The models will be applied to comparisons of countries, regions, socioeconomic groups, and historical periods.

This postdoctoral project will focus on applications of the models to human demographic data, from as wide an array of sources as possible (including, but not limited to, databases, surveys, censuses, register data, and models), to explore both familiar questions, and develop new ones, in family demography. You will be responsible for identifying sources of data, developing substantive research questions, and carrying out analyses.

The Department of Anthropology at Shandong University in Jinan, China invites applications for two or three full-time, non-adjunct faculty positions in any rank in socio-cultural anthropology, effective March 2019 and September 2019. Geographical areas broadly cover East Asia and the adjacent territories. Theoretical fields are open. Postdoctoral researchers - computational modeling, EEG, TMS

Conducting interviews at SFN for a Brown University Human Imaging & Computational Neuroscience Position

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the lab of Dr. Stephanie Jones at Brown University. Our group combines human electrophysiological recordings and computational neural modeling techniques to study the mechanisms and meaning of brain dynamics in health in disease. We collaborate extensively with animal electrophysiologists and clinicians to develop data constrained models that are translationally relevant. We are expanding our research efforts to including non-invasive brain stimulation. A postdoctoral position is available to integrate simultaneous human EEG and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in humans, with computational neural modeling developments. The postdoctoral researcher will help expand our new software tool Human Neocortical Neurosolver (https://hnn.brown.edu) for circuit level interpretation of EEG/MEG signals to include TMS studies. She/he will also help with the design, implementation and analysis of our TMS/EEG experiments.

Candidates should have a PhD in neuroscience, computational neuroscience, computer science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, and/or related field. Strong quantitative and programming skills are required. The ideal candidate would have experience in computational neuroscience methods applied to human EEG and brain stimulation data. However, experience in all areas is not required. Candidates should be able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary and fun work environment.

The Neural Decoding and Data Analytics Lab at the Center for Bioelectronic Medicine, headed by Assistant Professor Theo Zanos PhD, focuses on neural recordings and data analysis methods to gain insights into decoding and encoding mechanisms of the brain and peripheral nerves to and from stimuli, actions and other physiological functions. The lab utilizes a variety of techniques from signal processing, machine learning, optimization, neurophysiology and bioelectronic systems for closed-loop neural recording and stimulation, both in health and in disease models. The ultimate goal is to develop neuromodulation therapies that will observe the state of the organism and the organ system that is targeted, to deliver individualized treatment of diseases in real-time.

The successful candidate will develop or deploy computational tools, will take part in neurophysiology experiments and collect data, organize and analyze data, collaborate with other research staff and publish and present data in a timely manner. They will also work collaboratively with other investigators to facilitate their scientific research and training. Furthermore, they will participate in various types of institute and community activities and may apply for grant funding and/or patents as appropriate. The position comes with considerably competitive compensation.

Ph.D. positions in Cognitive Neuroscience on spatial navigation, memory and conceptual processing

My newly established lab at the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences in Trento (Northern Italy) is looking for Ph.D. candidates interested in studying the neural mechanisms of spatial navigation, conceptual knowledge, and their interaction. The post-holder will work in the context of an ERC-Starting Grant (NOAM) on the spatial organization of declarative knowledge.

The ideal candidates should have excellent understanding of neuroimaging data analysis, as well as strong programming skills (matlab, python, R, etc.). Experience with state of the art data analysis techniques (e.g., Representational Similarity Analysis, MVPA, hexadirectional coding), as well as computational approaches to cognitive neuroscience and/or computational linguistics are a plus. Excellent English (oral and written) and good communication skills are necessary.

The university of Trento is one of the best University in Italy, and in 2018 was the best Italian university in the European Teaching Ranking. Moreover the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences (CIMeC) has been recently ranked as the leading Cognitive Neuroscience research unit in Italy. Its faculty have won several highly competitive grants on the international and national levels, including European Research Council (ERC) Starting, Consolidator and Advanced grants, as well as highly competitive grants awarded by the local province.

The research center has amazing facilities, including a brand new 3T fMRI scanner Siemens Trio (100% research), and an Elekta 306 channel MEG system. Different brain stimulation devices are available, including a TMS- EEG combined set up. We may also have access, through external collaborations, to a 7T scanner. The official language in the center is English and several students, researchers and PIs come from abroad.

The Trentino region is at the top level for quality of life in Europe, with fantastic nature (the Dolomite, lake Garda), great infrastructures and welfare. The weather is beautiful and the food is delicious.

The overall project aims to advance our understanding of disparities in child development by parental socioeconomic status (SES). It leverages rich cohort and administrative data from six countries - France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States – embedding them in a harmonized framework. The project moves beyond cross-sectional and single country snapshots by studying the question of how inequalities develop over time (ages 3 to 16), what factors may influence inequalities and how national context may strengthen or buffer these processes. Child development is conceptualised broadly, to include cognitive, social/emotional and health outcomes, recognizing the interplay of multiple spheres of development in childhood.
