It shouldn’t RUIN the series- it should confirm that the events in fact took place . Hence the Writer is explaining what happened ;thru the eyes of a character the audience follows,
but has zero role. (This is why cinephiles shouldn’t idol characters).
When I look at stories like this, where the main characters do nothing to the plot of the story
I’m like… yea these are based on real events.
