I was not expecting it to be this good
If you love the original Mary Shelley novel and like I, have grown tired of the cliche popculture trope-laden portrayals of the classic tale, and just want a GOOD version of the original story (theres been precious few book-accurate cinematic retellings of Frankenstein, and only ONE was decent) well they finally made one, and its this.
Not saying its perfect, theres a few gripes, but honestly theyre minor issues that can be overlooked.
This version actually nails the complex emotional journey of the original novel, even tho they make some changes for narrative or creative sake; The spirit of the novel is very much there. The monster is absolutely gushing pathos, and Victor is both hateable and pitiable, something very few other attempts have managed to do, the parallels betwen victor and the creature as victims of one another's flawed humanity is portrayed like no one else has managed.
I literally hate Guillermo del Toro's fat leftist ass, but this was great.
