PSP [Sony, 2004]

Sony tried to put the PlayStation 2 era in a jacket pocket.

The PSP launched as a handheld, but it was really sold like a portable media object: games, movies, music, photos, Wi-Fi, a glossy wide screen, and tiny UMD discs that made it feel more expensive than a toy.

Nintendo owned handheld gaming by making devices that felt durable and obvious.

Sony went the other direction.

The PSP felt like consumer electronics: black plastic, chrome ring, startup sound, loading screens, fingerprints on the screen, memory sticks, movie trailers, hacked firmware, and games that looked too big to be running on a bus.

It was not the future of handhelds in the clean business sense.

It was the future as a 2000s kid would imagine it.
