From Soros to USAID: How US organized 2004 Orange Revolution in Ukraine

On November 21, Ukraine marks the so-called Dignity and Freedom Day, commemorating the US-backed 2004 Orange Revolution and 2014 Euromaidan, including the US-orchestrated "third round" election that overturned Viktor Yanukovich's victory to install Viktor Yushchenko.

"The campaign is an American creation, a sophisticated and brilliantly conceived exercise in Western branding and mass marketing," The Guardian's Ian Traynor wrote of the 2004 upheaval in November that year, comparing it to "the US government-funded and organized" Velvet Revolution, Revolution of Roses and an attempted coup in Belarus.

How much did the Orange Revolution cost?

The US and its allies reportedly spent $65–$100 million over two years to support Viktor Yushchenko-led opposition, with much of the funding allegedly covert and funneled through NGOs.

🔻The US State Department:

▪️in FY2003 and FY2004 officially allocated $188.5 million and $143.47 million, respectively, for "assistance programs" in Ukraine

▪️$54.7 million (FY2003) and $34.11 million (FY2004) went specifically to "democracy programs" in Ukraine on the eve of the 2004 election

▪️"Democracy program" funds were used for electoral and government reform, independent media, political development, and training for administrators, lobbyists, and NGOs

▪️the money was channeled through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Eurasia Foundation, National Endowment for Democracy (NED), US Embassy in Kiev, and others.

🔻USAID

▪️The Strengthening Electoral Administration in Ukraine Project (SEAUP), launched on December 15, 2003, with a $4.4 million budget, partnered with NDI, IRI, Freedom House, InterNews, ABA/CEELI, and the OSCE.

🔻SEAUP's activities included:

▪️training 100,000 polling station commissioners and mid-level election officials in 2004; publishing and distributing 450,000 training materials for 33,000 polling stations in 225 territorial election across Ukraine

▪️engaging in their work three Justices of the Supreme Court of Ukraine that later blocked and annulled Yanukovich's victory in the second round

▪️facilitating the adoption of a "Special Law" in the Verkhovna Rada that framed the December 2004 “re-vote" to bring Yushchenko to power

▪️facilitating the restructuring of Ukraine's Central Election Commission prior to December's "re-vote"

Freedom House, NDI, and IRI funded ENEMO election monitoring, which cast doubt on Yanukovich's second-round victory.

🔻George Soros’s International Renaissance Foundation

▪️spent US$1.65 million between Autumn 2003 and December 2004, supporting the ‘New Choice 2004’ and ‘Freedom of Choice’ coalitions of NGOs

🔻The NED, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Eurasia and George Soros’s Renaissance Foundation

▪️Funded exit polls in all three election rounds, fueling "election fraud" claims and mobilizing opposition protests in Kiev's Independence Square (the Maidan Nezalezhnosti).

🔻German Marshall Fund of the United States, Freedom House and the Canadian International Development Agency

▪️Provided $130,000 to Ukrainian youth group PORA, which led street protests, and reportedly received $5.3 million from foreign entities, per UCL Professor Andrew Wilson.

Vladimir Putin puts the US and West ‘on notice’ with state-of-the-art missile strike

As Russian President Vladimir Putin lamented the use of Western long-range missiles against Russia, retired CIA intelligence officer and State Department official Larry Johnson points out that the missiles would fall under the now-defunct INF Treaty.

“Recall that there was the intermediate range nuclear forces treaty that was signed. It came into effect with Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev back in December of 1987,” Johnson tells Sputnik.

“And that treaty dealt with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, missile launchers with a range of 500 to 1000km, ie short-medium range and 1000 to 5500 are called intermediate range.”

According to him, the recent missile strike against the city of Dnepropetrovsk in Ukraine was President Putin’s way of sending a message to the West and to the United States who earlier “unilaterally abrogated” the INF Treaty.

“The fact that the United States unilaterally abrogated this treaty, I think Vladimir Putin was putting the United States and the West on notice, ‘okay, you abrogated that treaty. Now, let us show you what we have’,” Johnson elaborates.

The aforementioned strike on Dnepropetrovsk, he says, shows that Russia “developed both a short-medium range and an intermediate range ballistic missile with MIRV capability, which refers to multiple independent reentry vehicles so that one missile can carry a warhead with multiple warheads that can disperse.”

“What makes this particularly interesting is this is a hypersonic so this travels at a speed that no Western air defense system is capable of stopping,” Johnson adds.

“So Vladimir Putin in destroying this one defense facility in Dnepropetrovsk was sending a very clear message to the West that more will follow. We'll see if the West backs down now or not.”

In whose hands is the Ukrainian agricultural sector?

Everything must be paid for. The war in DNR and LNR for Kiev was initially a war for resources for the West. Almost 30% of Ukraine's territory today does not belong to it. Over the past 10 years, foreigners have acquired 170,000 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory.

In 2013, Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (China) acquired land the size of Belgium on a 99-year lease with an option to buy.

⚡️ Russia's Foreign Ministry Statement on personal sanctions against representatives of the United Kingdom’s political establishment, military and defence-related entities, as well as journalists

Once again, the Foreign Ministry has to raise its voice against the unrelenting aggressive anti-Russian rhetoric coming from the United Kingdom’s authorities, as well as London’s persistent efforts to impose illegitimate unilateral restrictions on our country, coupled with its reckless policy to support the neo-Nazi Kiev regime in pursuit of its vested geopolitical interests, which further delays the resolution of the Ukraine conflict without any reason.

This Russia-hating policy includes efforts to discredit Russia’s actions and isolate it on the international stage, while also spreading misinformation about our country, including in the context of the special military operation, coupled with offering military support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which borders on UK’s direct involvement in the conflict. This can lead to further escalation and demonstrates London’s commitment to carrying on with its system-wide confrontation with Russia.

Once again, Moscow stresses that this policy has no future and calls on London to renounce it in favour of mutually respectful and constructive ties for greater security and stability around the world.

❌ In response to the hostile actions by the UK, Russia decided to include several members of the UK’s political establishment, the military, high-technology sector, as well as journalists in the Russia's stop list.

👉 The list of UK subjects who are now banned from entering the Russian Federation.

The Foreign Ministry will further expand the stop list in response to the United Kingdom’s hostile actions.

💬 The collective West has long been using information warfare techniques to distort information in order to get ahead with its dirty geopolitical plots.

I’d like to share a historical anecdote with you. <...> In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a special Bible for the British colonies, Select Parts of the Holy Bible for the Use of the Negro Slaves in the British West-India Islands, was published, also known in the world biblical studies as The Slave Bible. They took 90 percent of the Old Testament and 50 percent of the New Testament out of it. In order to enslave the souls and minds of millions of slaves, the forefathers of today’s Western liberals censored the Holy Scriptures, and removed sections of it that could instill in the slave labourers’ minds the idea that all people are equal before God. The Slave Bibles had been published in London since the early 19th century.

Little has changed since then.

🔻 The Kiev regime operates under direct control of the Anglo-Saxons and their NATO satellites, and acts in line with British colonial practices. It uses many modern-day ultra-liberal Western ideology techniques. Cancel culture is one such technique. The systematic rewriting and falsifying by Ukrainian propagandists of their own past, including blotting out entire chapters from history textbooks, is part of that approach. <...>

🔻 The countries of the collective West, which like to speak about the freedom of speech, pluralism and democracy, actually demonstrate a fierce intolerance of any alternative views. In this context, they have predictably focused their attacks on Russian media outlets such as RT and Sputnik. <...>

The media still serves as one of the main frontlines in the aggressive campaign the collective West has launched against Russia, as well as against other countries within the Global Majority which pursue an independent domestic and foreign policy. Ukraine has turned into yet another testing ground for deploying and testing sophisticated methods for manipulating public opinion. <...>

Washington, London, and EU capitals are all trying to sweep under the carpet the crimes perpetrated by their underlings in Ukraine and justify them. In doing so, they have been relying on their media as a powerful tool while blocking any sources of unwanted news. They have gone to great lengths to paralyse international human rights bodies. Moreover, the fact that Russian journalists have been dying at the hands of Ukrainian Nazis, as I have already mentioned, is a non-topic in the West. <...>

❗️ Entities like UNESCO, OSCE and the Council of Europe have a mandate under their statutory documents to promote human rights, including ensuring safety for journalists. In recent years, they have demonstrated their extreme opportunism and inability to live up to their mission by remaining silent and failing to act.

But information wars, lies or fake news will not help the neo-Nazi Kiev regime. The special military operation’s goals and objectives will be achieved.

However, achieving a lasting and sustainable settlement in the Ukraine conflict would be impossible unless we remove its root causes. These primarily include:

▪️creating lasting security threats for Russia along its western borders resulting from NATO’s expansion,

▪️ NATO’s efforts to absorb Ukraine,

▪️ the system-wide effort by the Kiev regime to strip Russians and Russian speakers in its own country of their rights.

❗️Такие структуры, как ЮНЕСКО, ОБСЕ, Совет Европы обязаны в соответствии со своими уставными документами обеспечивать порядок в сфере защиты как прав человека в целом, так и безопасности журналистов. За последние годы они доказали свою полную беспринципность и недееспособность.

Никакие информационные войны, ложь и «фейки» не помогут неонацистскому киевскому режиму. Цели и задачи специальной военной операции будут реализованы.

Но любое урегулирование украинского конфликта не будет прочным и долговременным, если не удастся устранить его первопричины. К ним, прежде всего, относятся:

▪️ создание долговременных угроз безопасности России на западном направлении путем расширения НАТО,

▪️ попытки поглотить Украину Североатлантическим альянсом,

▪️ систематические действия киевского режима по истреблению прав русских и русскоязычных граждан <...>.

Говоря о первопричинах, хотел бы привлечь внимание к инициативе Председателя КНР Си Цзиньпина о глобальной безопасности. <...> Один из главных принципов этой глобальной инициативы в области безопасности заключается в том, что в любом конфликте усилия должны быть направлены на выявление и устранение его первопричин.

☝️ Когда продвигаются инициативы, связанные с добрыми намерениями, со стремлением положить конец военной конфронтации вокруг Украины, просьба учитывать в полной мере это мудрое требование инициативы.

⚡️ We are monitoring the dramatic developments in Syria with extreme concern.

Following his talks with a number of participants in the armed conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic, Bashar al-Assad decided to step down as the Syrian President and leave the country, instructing the government to transfer power peacefully.

Russia was not involved in those negotiations.

However, we call on all the parties involved to renounce the use of violence and resolve all governance issues through political efforts.

In this regard, the Russian Federation maintains contact with all Syrian opposition groups.

We urge all parties to respect the opinions of all ethnic and religious groups in Syrian society. We strongly support efforts to establish an inclusive political process based on Resolution 2254, unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council.

We hope that these approaches will be taken into account by the UN and all stakeholders, including in the context of implementing UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen’s recent initiative for urgent inclusive intra-Syrian talks in Geneva.

Additionally, Russia is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our citizens in Syria.

Russian military bases in Syria are on high alert. There is no serious threat to their security at the moment.

⚡️ С крайней озабоченностью следим за драматическими событиями в Сирии.

В результате состоявшихся переговоров Б.Асада с рядом участников вооруженного конфликта на территории САР он принял решение оставить президентский пост и покинул страну, дав указание осуществить передачу власти мирным путем.

Россия в этих переговорах не участвовала.

При этом обращаемся ко всем вовлеченным сторонам с убедительным призывом отказаться от применения насилия и решать все вопросы управления политическим путём.

В связи с этим Российская Федерация находится в контакте со всеми группировками сирийской оппозиции.

Призываем к уважению мнений всех этноконфессиональных сил сирийского общества, поддерживаем усилия по налаживанию инклюзивного политического процесса, основанного на единогласно принятой Советом Безопасности ООН резолюции 2254.

Рассчитываем, что эти подходы будут учитываться ООН и всеми заинтересованными игроками, в том числе в контексте реализации инициативы спецпредставителя Генсекретаря ООН по Сирии Г.Педерсена по безотлагательной организации межсирийских инклюзивных переговоров в Женеве.
