15 MINUTE NEIGHBOURHOODS

Following on from what Mike just posted about Arup’s “Headline Report” on C40 cities in 2019, the next year they were pushing 15 minute neighbourhoods (15MNs) in a number of posts on their website.

If you search around a bit you’ll find Guildford and Ipswich were the first to show an interest. With Oxford and Canterbury confirming they want to introduce 15MNs you can see where this is going…

NOT OUR FUTURE is planning a “Day of Action” In January where we will leaflet every home in the Oxford City Council area informing residents how serious these 15MNs are in their current state.

To coerce people into these areas at the threat of fines and whatever else and enabled by constant surveillance and continuous deference to authority is not our future.

By all means create a 15MN somewhere and make it so good people WANT to live there without being forced to.

Hungary Blocks EU Aid for Ukraine

Hungary on Tuesday blocked a massive EU aid package for Ukraine worth 18 billion euros ($18.9 billion), angering other members of the bloc.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Budapest is not against sending aid to Ukraine but objects to how the EU wants to do it. The 18 billion euro plan would require all 27 EU members to jointly borrow the funds, something Hungary has previously said it’s against.

The 18 billion euro aid package for Ukraine is meant to help cover Ukraine’s massive $38 billion budget deficit for 2023. The US is expected to put up a similar amount for the deficit, and the $37.7 billion in new Ukraine aid the White House seeks from Congress includes $14.5 billion in budgetary aid.

Orban said that Hungary is ready to “give financial assistance to Ukraine, on a bilateral basis,” but said the EU’s proposal is not the solution. “If we continue to go down the road towards a debt community, we will not be able to turn back,” he said.

Hungary is already at odds with Brussels and risks losing billions in EU funding over allegations of corruption that have been leveled since Orban won reelection in April. According to The Associated Press, the EU’s European Commission has proposed suspending 7.5 billion euros in funding for Hungary over claims of mismanagement of EU money and “democratic backsliding.”

In this presentation I chart a succinct intellectual history of the myth of progress and how it has been embedded, and is still embedded, in the claims of science and technology. Furthermore, I aim to show how transhumanism depends upon and extends this rampant and robust myth and that its enthusiasts subsequently derive religious value from it. First, I begin with the claims of this myth of progress and try to arrive at some characterizing features of it. Next I turn to the origins of this myth of progress and how it became entwined with the claims of technoscience leading to its prominence in the 19th century. I then turn to the first part of the 20th century when this myth is seriously questioned and the entire edifice of the Modern project begins to crumble at its base. From here I focus on more recent technoscientific utopias that culminate in transhumanism and show a propensity in taking up this myth once again. Finally, I give several comments on the religious dimensions of transhumanism and assert that the myth of progress is one of its core doctrines.

Dr Michael Burdett is Assistant Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Nottingham and an associate of the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion, University of Oxford. Before becoming an academic and completing his DPhil at the University of Oxford, Michael worked in the aerospace and robotics industries for several years working with a firm that had contracts with NASA and JPL. He holds degrees in engineering, physics, and theology and has been given academic and professional awards in each field.
