UK regulator appoints former Google exec as “Online Safety” head after online censorship bill is reintroduced

"A former Google executive will play a key role in developing new “online safety” rules in the United Kingdom (UK) as a new censorship and surveillance law is expected to come into force.
Gill Whitehead, who was previously a member of Google’s UK Management Group and previously led Google’s consumer and market insights function across several continents, was appointed as the Group Director of Online Safety at the UK communications regulator, Office of Communications (Ofcom), yesterday.
The appointment was announced days after the UK government reintroduced the “Online Safety Bill” — a censorship and surveillance law that will empower Ofcom to levy huge fines against Big Tech firms that fail to enforce the censorship rules in their terms of service consistently.
Whitehead will start leading Ofcom’s Online Safety Group from April 2023 as it starts preparing new rules that will “hold tech firms to account for prioritising their users’ safety.”
Bloomberg reports that Whitehead’s appointment is part of a trend of Ofcom being increasingly led by former Big Tech executives with Whitehead set to work alongside former Amazon and Meta executives"

While the reintroduced Online Safety Bill has dropped some controversial provisions that required platforms to censor “legal but harmful” content, many problematic aspects still remain:

, a new criminal offenses that was introduced in the previous version of the Online Safety Bill — a “false communications” offense which criminalizes sending “information that the person knows to be false” with the intention of causing “psychological harm” to a “likely audience” with “no reasonable excuse” — is still in this version of the bill. Those convicted of a false communications offense can be imprisoned for up to 51 weeks in prison.

the plans to ban private messaging in the UK are still in the Online Safety Bill. A legal analysis that was published last week found that the bill gives the government the right to “impose technologies that would intercept and scan private communications on a mass scale.”

the government press release states that platforms “may have to use age assurance measures” when the Online Safety Bill comes into force. This means that adults could be forced to hand over highly sensitive information, by submitting scans of their identity documents or having their face biometrically scanned, in order to use social media platforms

I don’t claim to have unique insights here. I don’t. But I do think I can see ways in which the perpetrators might play out their not inconsiderable hand.

Ethical Principles of Public Health

1.   All public health advice should consider the impact on overall health, rather than solely be concerned with a single disease. It should always consider both benefits and harms from public health measures and weigh short-term gains against long-term harms.
2.   Public health is about everyone. Any public health policy must first and foremost protect society's most vulnerable, including children, low-income families, persons with disabilities and the elderly. It should never shift the burden of disease from the affluent to the less affluent.
3.   Public health advice should be adapted to the needs of each population, within cultural, religious, geographic, and other contexts. 
4.   Public health is about comparative risk evaluations, risk reduction, and reducing uncertainties using the best available evidence, since risk usually cannot be entirely eliminated.
5.   Public health requires public trust. Public health recommendations should present facts as the basis for guidance, and never employ fear or shame to sway or manipulate the public.
6.   Medical interventions should not be forced or coerced upon a population, but rather should be voluntary and based on informed consent.  Public health officials are advisors, not rule setters, and provide information and resources for individuals to make informed decisions. 
7.   Public health authorities must be honest and transparent, both with what is known and what is not known. Advice should be evidence-based and explained by data, and authorities must acknowledge errors or changes in evidence as soon as they are made aware of them.. 
8.   Public health scientists and practitioners should avoid conflicts-of-interest, and any unavoidable conflicts-of-interest must be clearly stated.
9.   In public health, open civilized debate is profoundly important. It is unacceptable for public health professionals to censor, silence or intimidate members of the public or other public health scientists or practitioners.
10. It is critical for public health scientists and practitioners always to listen to the public, who are living the public health consequences of public health decisions, and to adapt appropriately.

If you allow this to happen, I’m absolutely certain it’ll become required for national travel. I’m afraid I’ve been right since June 2020, when I told my family that this is going to evolve to the point you will require a valid digital pass to move around. They pooh poohed it. Not now. There wasn’t any other plausible explanation & destination, based on locking down much of the world for no useful reason, which I knew to be the case based on first principles, which remained valid.
So, this is coming unless each & every one of us struggles against it.

"An interdisciplinary research team from the University of Basel and the University Hospital Basel has studied the effects of the Covid-19 booster vaccination on the heart muscle. According to their findings, which have not yet been peer-reviewed, mild damage is more common than previously thought. Cardiologist Professor Christian Müller talks about the results in an interview.

In our study, we found evidence of temporary mild damage to cardiac cells in 22 of the 777 participants - 2.8% instead of the anticipated 0.0035%. So there’s slight damage to heart muscle cells in almost 3% of the cases, which shouldn’t be overestimated, but also not ignored.

According to current knowledge, the cardiac muscle can’t regenerate, or only to a very limited degree at best. So it’s possible that repeated booster vaccinations every year could cause moderate damage to the heart muscle cells."

Rising Cost Of European Energy Makes EV Battery Plants "Unfeasible", VW Exec Says

We've already written this month about how the "tax break" incentive to buy an EV is starting to vaporize into thin air in places like Japan and the U.K.. Now, the irony continues, as rising costs of energy in Europe, helped along by "green" energy policies, are making industrial projects like battery cell factories "unfeasible".

Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schaefer said this week that investments in German and EU projects will no longer make financial sense if "policy makers fail to control ballooning energy prices in the long-term", according to the Times.

In a post on LinkedIn, Schaefer said: “Unless we manage to reduce energy prices in Germany and Europe quickly and reliably, investments in energy-intensive production or new battery cell factories in Germany and the EU will be practically unviable. The value creation in this area will take place elsewhere.”

Last week, French and German economy ministers proposed an outline for policy cooperation that Schaefer claims “falls short in crucial areas and does not address the envisaged priorities”, the report says.

“Outdated and bureaucratic state-aid rules” fail to focus enough on “the short-term ramp-up, scaling and industrialisation of production," he said.

The report says that EU officials are focused on responding to President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which they say "violates World Trade Organisation rules and discriminates against non-US companies."

Meanwhile, Volkswagen is in the process of putting 6 battery factories in operation across Europe by the year 2030, the report says. The company's lead plant in Germany broke ground this July and already has a €3bn (R53bn) joint venture with Umicore in place for cathode material production.

Recall, just days ago, we reported that the UK was looking to raise more tax revenue from electric vehicles, shattering the years-long assumption that if you contributed to "helping the environment" by buying an EV, you'd be entitled to subsidies and tax credits.

Now Japan's internal affairs ministry is reportedly weighing whether or not to raise taxes on electric vehicles in order to make up for a shortfall in income from taxes on traditional gas powered cars.

And so it's turning out that the economics of an industry pivot set into motion almost solely due to government subsidization may not entirely make sense. Who would have figured?
