I see a lot of people talking about SLV as though it's silver.
It's not.
SLV is an ETF run by BlackRock. Each share of SLV is basically an IOU for silver. If BlackRock can't make good on the obligations represented by these shares, owners thereof may be left holding the bag.
The more people take physical delivery on silver now, the harder it will be for silver ETFs to make good on their obligations later because it forces them to buy physical silver for a higher price than they sold their IOUs.
The increased short term demand for physical silver could drive up the short term price of SLV shares as well because the latter's price is informed by the former. This means big gains for large institutions like Citadel who own tons of shares, but only if they find someone to take those shares off their hands NOW before everyone realizes the ETF is overleveraged.
If everyone rushes to sell SLV at the same time, the ETF could collapse entirely.
I wouldn't want to own any of that junk paper, personally.
