Fun fact. Many people know me as "first Uzbek at Google" from 10y ago, but I don't think that's true. When I joined, I found that there is a deactivated username nodira@google.com which I believe belonged to https://x.com/nodira when she was at Google as an intern before me.

I'm thinking to turning this channel into an AI-focused one. AI will impact all of us, whether you want it or not, so it seems like it's going to be a relevant topic. I like doing thought experiments, exploring various hypothetical scenarios, but currently most of them stay between me and Claude. Posting here seems safe: small audience, limited reach in the US.
But first, I recommend watching this Lex Fridman podcast with Dario Amodei (led GPT3, scaling laws; Anthropic CEO), Amanda Askell (creator of Claude's character) and Chris Olah (founder or the field of mechanistic interoperability). They explained a lot already, and the format is voice, so it's easy to consume while doing something.

Most of the talks are available in real time only to paying participants and will appear online later, but the most important ones, the keynotes, will be live streamed.
π Keynotes (all times are in PST time zone):
- Mon, 7:30-9pm: Peter DeSantis (leads all of AWS Compute)
- Tue, 8am-10:30am: Matt Garman, AWS CEO
- Wed 8:30-10:30am: Swami, leads AI
- Thu: 3-4:30pm: partner keynote
- Fri: 8:30-10:30am: Werner Vogels, CTO
π‘ Subtle things:
- You need to register to watch it, so better do it in advance!
- Some talks are in PM and some are AM, easy to mix them up, especially after converting them to an Eurasian time zone.
- I expect Matt's keynote to contain key announcements, with Swami covering more details.
- Matt is new CEO. I've never heard him speak so it would be interesting to watch.

If you are a techie from Uzbekistan, live in US and are interested in a community, then this telegram group is for you: https://xn--r1a.website/+dMmqX5JxMRVhOGQy. The group is primarily for networking and for those who work or do business in Tech from US.
It would be nice to have one place for those in US, similar to how we have @tasdev_talks where a lot of members are currently in Uzbekistan. I don't know if there are existing group like this new one, but it is the first of this kind that I was invited to.
The new group was organized by @coder_off who recently cofounded a startup with Akmal Payziev (who you might know from MyTaxi and Express24). I have a couple of other friends there as well, from various states. Hope this helps.

It's great to see that Google is serious about science. First there was AlphaFold, now this.
AI is so vast, there won't be a single winner. It's like saying who is best on the internet, or who is best with electricity. I expect specialization over time. For example, one of the reasons ChatGPT is so well known is because they focus on the consumer market. Claude is well known among programmers because it is so good at coding, etc.

I've pasted some additional links as the comments to the previous post, but this one probably deserve as top-level post. This is what to expect in coming years, tweet by Alex Albert:
Last year, Claude was in the assist phase.
In 2025, Claude will do hours of expert-level work independently and collaborate alongside you.
By 2027, we expect Claude to find breakthrough solutions to problems that would've taken teams years to solve.

I'm personally excited about this launch, Amazon Alexa+, and have been waiting for it for quite a long time (it was delayed a couple of times). Besides the presumed extra revenue for Anthropic (IDK the details, except that Claude is used inside), it is about freaking time we have smart voice assistants, don't you think? I had high hopes for Siri, but Apple Intelligence was a complete disappointment. Turns out intelligence still requires a lot more compute than an iPhone can offer. Crossing my fingers for Alexa+, but not sure how I'll use it yet.

In other personal news, I'm super proud of my wife who joined AWS (Amazon Connect) as SDE Apprentice this week π€©. As much innovation and excitement happening in the AI bubble, I'm pretty sure her growth is faster than mine. This is just a beginning.

Re my wife at AWS: she went through https://adadevelopersacademy.org, a bootcamp oriented for minorities in tech, including women. It is a bit hard to get inside (high competition), but those who get through get to study full stack engineering for 6mo and on completion are pretty-much-guaranteed an internship/apprenticeship in companies like Amazon, Oracle, SAP. She was in another bootcamp before that, and she has been learning to code for the past 5y or so.
From my vague/basic understanding, the goal of the organization is to increase diversity in tech, so they are focused on minorities. Consider applying if you qualify.

Weird things happen in AI world. This Seattle newspaper listed names of some people in my office. Why? Good thing I've hidden that I live in Seattle area from LinkedIn. We had protests against AI in SF, including last week. Some people got threats.
I've hidden the fact that I work for Anthropic on my LinkedIn. I don't know how this AI thing will go down but I won't be surprised if such attention would be only distracting/undesirable. I fully expect to get some AI hate at some point.
I don't consider this channel a highly visible place. Telegram isn't popular US.
