Money quote: "The thick, black-and-white rulebook packaged with every copy of the 1979 war-game The Campaign For North Africa is full of obtuse decrees, but the tabletop community always had a special appreciation for entry 52.6 - affectionately known as the “macaroni rule.” The Italian troops in World War II were outfitted with noodle rations, and in the name of historical dogma, the player responsible for the Italians is required to distribute an extra water ration to their forces, so that their pasta may be boiled. Soldiers that do not receive their “pasta point” may immediately become “disorganized,” rendering them useless in the field. It’s a fact of life really: if the Italians can’t boil their pasta, the Italians may desert.
It was a joke, by the way. Richard Berg, the legendary game designer and author of The Campaign For North Africa, says so himself. He’ll happily admit that this was an unreasonable game for unreasonable people, but still, a pasta point? There’s attention to detail, and then there’s taking the piss. As Berg explains, the rule wasn’t even entirely factually accurate. “The reality is that the Italians cooked their pasta with the tomato sauce that came with the cans,” he says. “But I didn’t want to do a rule on that.” Yes, at the pinnacle of North Africa’s ridiculous excess, even Berg couldn’t help but poke a little fun at the obsessives in his wake."

Però no, alla fine devo rispondere.
E i feed rss mi danno l'ansia.

Money quote: “Whether or not the earth around Kalkriese still reveals the decisive evidence, Germans follow this detective work with more than fascination. The battle is part of their centuries-long quest for a national identity. Ever since the 16th century, following the chance discovery of a Roman account of the battle in the German abbey of Corvey, Arminius has served as a figurehead for nationalists seeking to unite the fragmented German-speaking territories”
https://global.handelsblatt.com/politics/the-battle-that-created-germany-841255
Money quote 2: “The misty forests around Kalkriese hold many more secrets. As the archaeologists keep digging, historians are writing a further chapter of the Hermann saga: how a nation fabricated history to invent itself. In these days of populist firebrands tweeting new myths, it’s a cautionary tale. And as for Hermann the German: He was killed by members of his own tribe only a few years after his triumph. His tribe, the Cherusci, decimated by subsequent battles with Romans, vanished from memory.”

Money quote: "The crux of this whole situation is that it's currently very difficult for adult content creators to get paid online, and Patreon has in recent years emerged as one of the main sources of revenue for many of these creators.
Money quote: "With PowerPoint as well as its predecessors, the motif of the slide was, of course, lifted directly from the world of photography. Some presentation programs actually generated 35-mm slides for display with a slide projector. In most cases, though, the early programs created slides that were printed on paper for incorporation into reports, transferred to transparencies for use on overhead projectors, or saved as digital files to be displayed on computer monitors."

It even reveals how we can expect both automation and the discussion around automation to continue unfolding in the years ahead.
