Boh.

Money quote: "They found a very surprising correlation: A given person, in 2006, eating the same amount of calories, taking in the same quantities of macronutrients like protein and fat, and exercising the same amount as a person of the same age did in 1988 would have a BMI that was about 2.3 points higher. In other words, people today are about 10 percent heavier than people were in the 1980s, even if they follow the exact same diet and exercise plans."

Money quote: "Starting June 21, we will begin publishing Backchannel as a weekly digital magazine on wired.com. As players in a news cycle that’s rapidly approaching light speed, we believe our work will stand out more as a weekly event — an occasion — than as yet more fodder for the daily churn. And now we’ll be hosted on Wired’s site, rather than on Medium. We will still be editorially independent, of course, and our staff is unchanged"

Money quote: "James Benson, a former urban planner based in Seattle who authored Personal Kanban: Mapping Work — Navigating Life, tells Quartz that industrial Kanban was a way for Toyota to avoid overproducing. He has adapted the system to reduce overhead of the emotional sort—the “too many tasks on my mind” feeling that’s the biggest downside of our mostly doomed attempts to multitask"

Money quote: "Cinematographer Armand Dijcks had been experimenting with animating splashes of water when he first encountered Collins’s photographs. He wondered if he could show the waves “in motion, but staying in place at the same time,” he says."

Non siate quelli che "so-tutto-io". Siate quelli che vogliono sapere tutto. Eterni cercatori

Se lo stato spia, che legtittimità ha? Ci protegge? Ci aggredisce?

Money quote: “hat tomb in the sky will be forever Theresa May’s monument. Grenfell marks the spot and her visit marks the moment the last vestiges of her career were finally rubbed out. She made it her own yesterday by that fateful “visit” to a handful of senior fire officers, guarding her from any contaminating contact with the bereaved and newly homeless. Dead to emotion or empathy, she sealed her fate.”

Money quote: ““This is a scene from a movie from the 1940s called Gaslight,” Todd Richmond told the packed room, pointing to a screen showing a man and a woman standing by an old gaslight in a home. “How many people know what gaslighting is? So the term gaslighting comes from when lights used to be gas fueled. And it's a way of driving someone into mental distress by manipulating their environment without telling them and then denying that it's being manipulated. So the classic, the gaslight lamp lighting is that you slowly turn down the lights on your spouse because you're trying to drive your spouse nuts. Your spouse says, ‘Is it getting darker?’ And you say, ‘No, I don't know what you're talking about.’ And if you do that enough over time, you would begin to freak people out.

“So is VR the perfect platform for this? The answer is, yeah, if you're going to use it for that.””

Money quote: "Earlier this week, Bethesda Softworks gave fans two big virtual reality announcements: VR versions of beloved RPGs Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. You could argue that these kinds of big, open-world titles are the perfect application for VR — the medium needs games that can keep players entertained for more than a few hours, and people want to feel like they're really living in their favorite world.

I think, however, that you’d be wrong. Because so far, the little I’ve seen of both titles suggests that most of the great parts of present-day open-world games don’t translate well into a headset, and that the perfect VR open world won’t look anything like what we’re used to."

Money quote: "One more thing: Stop reading if a book sucks, you don’t need to complete it. Read the next book instead."

Money quote: "To make micropayments of one cent, we can’t just use Stripe. Because Stripe’s fees are about 30 cents or higher, a one cent payment to a creator would cost 31 cents and 97% of the money would go to Stripe. So we have developed a micropayments solution on bitcoin. Our solution is like the lightning network, but is not dependent on segwit. We are the first and only group to demonstrate a working routed micropayment on bitcoin today. The marginal cost of a transaction on our network is zero, allowing genuine micropayments of one cent or lower."

Terapia e depressione. Una storia.

Money quote: "In the days prior to my appointment, I was so ready to acknowledge that I was unwell, feeling lighter for the first time in months, counting down the days until I’d finally have help. But when faced with a clipboard and forms that reduced my suffering to a checklist of symptoms — I feel sad or depressed. I have felt very depressed daily for at least 2 weeks. I have had similar episodes during my lifetime. I feel hopeless and helpless. I have been thinking about suicide — suddenly, I wasn’t so confident"

Invecchiare bene, invecchiare male, mantenersi giovani.

Money quote: "As scientists have worked to pinpoint a person’s biological age, they have learned that organs and tissues often age differently, making it difficult to reduce biological age to a single number. They have also made a discovery that echoes Langer’s work. How old we feel—our subjective age—can influence how we age. Where age is concerned, the pages torn off a calendar do not tell the whole story."

Money quote: "Mirrored and forbidding, the NSA campus stands as a fortress surrounded by a moat of parking. The public knows almost nothing about what happens inside: As Self writes, “the authorised information available on the building could practically be published in a single tweet.”"
