È la fine dell'anno: siamo arrivati al momento in cui si tirano le somme dell'anno passato e si fanno anche alcuni nuovi progetti. Ad esempio, perché non progettare e realizzare -nell'anno che viene- un nuovo sistema operativo? Non dovrebbe essere troppo difficile!

E per cominciare bene... secondo l'Economist, stiamo un po' esagerando con i dottori di ricerca. Stanno diventando una specie di truffa. Va bene che siamo tutti laureati e qualcosa bisogna fare per distinguersi, ma anche il PhD è diventato una cosa di massa. Lettura indicata per chi ci sta pensando o per chi lo rimpiange.

Money quote: "Whining PhD students are nothing new, but there seem to be genuine problems with the system that produces research doctorates (the practical “professional doctorates” in fields such as law, business and medicine have a more obvious value). There is an oversupply of PhDs. Although a doctorate is designed as training for a job in academia, the number of PhD positions is unrelated to the number of job openings. Meanwhile, business leaders complain about shortages of high-level skills, suggesting PhDs are not teaching the right things. Bisogna sempre avere voglia di imparare qualcosa di nuovo. Questo tizio, ad esempio, voleva imparare a fare l’hardware, essendo già a posto con le competenze software. Sappiamo che il grande tema del prossimo futuro è quello delle intelligenze artificiali che prenderanno il posto di lavoro di molti colletti bianchi. È una fase ulteriore dell’automazione iniziata con la prima e poi la seconda rivoluzione industriale (non a caso in Germania la chiamano “Industria 4.0).

Il punto è che questa trasformazione dovrebbe creare nuovi tipi di posti di lavoro oppure addirittura creare un mondo in cui non c’è più bisogno di lavorare. Siamo lontani da questo, a quanto mi risulta, ma la cosa interessante invece è un’altra. In Giappone i colletti bianchi stanno cominciando a saltare. Forse anche da altre parti. Forse anche da noi.
