C’è un problema a Cupertino?
Come alcuni lettori di questo canale hanno giustamente notato, qui si parla spesso di Apple. Non potrebbe essere diversamente visto il mio lavoro (come cronista di tecnologia sono specializzato sulla casa di Cupertino) e visto che qui metto le cose che scrivo o che leggo e trovo interessanti. Si parla tanto, anche di Apple.
Premessa per dire: ma c’è un problema con la Apple di Tim Cook? Perché negli ultimi tre-quattro anni è cambiato molto (ed era naturale, dopo l’avvicendamento al vertice del 2011 per la morte di Steve Jobs), in molti si sono chiesti se l’azienda avesse perso la sua capacità di innovare e di avere un pensiero strategico capace di renderla unica nel mercato della tecnologia e non solo. Le due cose vanno insieme ma sono separate.
Quel che sto notando, mano a mano che i mesi passano e si sommano lanci di nuovi prodotti, è che la strategia che la Apple post-2011 sta mettendo in strada è coerente ma più debole della recedente. In parte è fisiologico, probabilmente, perché gli ambiti in cui innovare in maniera “dirompente” (la mia tradizione per “disruptive”) sono sempre meno: computer fissi, portatili, tablet, smartphone, orologi... già fatto. Cosa resta? In effetti molto poco. I margini sono stretti.
Apple poi già in passato ci aveva abituato a transizioni brusche, quasi terapeutiche, nel passare da una tecnologia all’altra, da un mindset all’altro. Cosa salutare ma traumatica, che solitamente le persone (me per primo) rifiutano. Floppy da 3 pollici e mezzo, niente Floppy, niente più Mac OS, solo MacOS X, niente più Risc, solo Intel, niente Cd, solo Usb, solo USB-C.
Di solito a gestire queste transizioni c’era il geek alpha, il nerd silverlight, Steve Jobs, che sapeva essere convincente. Aveva le spalle larghe, la mano ferma, incassava le critiche e andavano tutti avanti. Adesso non è proprio più così.
L’azienda secondo me continua come prima, o come dentro l’azienda pensano fosse “prima”, quasi una memoria muscolare dell’innovazione. E invece mancano dei pezzi fondamentali. Da un lato manca lo stracitato Steve Jobs. Ma non è quello il problema.
Secondo me, poi, non sono i prodotti ad essere “sbagliati”. Tutt’altro. I nuovi MacBook Pro sono fenomenali, come lo era il MacBook 12 e come lo sono gli altri prodotti, iPhone 7 incluso. Non vanno bene ai programmatori di punta e ai montatori di video 8K? Se ne faranno una ragione.
Però quello che l’azienda, adesso tutta rivolta verso se stessa, non sta più capendo secondo me è un’altra cosa: che il resto del mondo è andato avanti. Che i MacBook Air e i MacBook Pro non sono più unici al mondo. Che gli Apple Watch non sono unici al mondo. Che gli iMac non sono più unici al mondo. Che macOS e iOS non sono più unici al mondo. La concorrenza fa le stesse cose, alcune volte peggio ma altre volte meglio. E non stanno più solo "copiando": quello è un grande alibi, una scusa pericolosissima.
Invece, Microsoft, Google, Dell, Asus, Samsung, Huawei, Sony e tutte le altre non sono rimaste a dormire. L’unicità dei prodotti di Apple, integrati verticalmente con il suo software, non è più tale. Così, oggi serve uno scarto, un salto di fantasia, il coraggio e l’intuizione di fare qualcosa di più e qualcosa di nuovo.
Questo mi sento di fare come critica ad Apple.
