Ho scoperto per caso R.F. Kuang, grazie a una mia studentessa (quanto appropriato!) ed è stata una notevole sorpresa. Questo profilo del New Yorker è perfetto in tutto, a partire dai difetti di una classe intellettuale che è poi l'oggetto della scrittura di Kuang. E poi scrive con Scrivener, che altro dire?

Progettata per sopravvivere all'apocalisse, come ultima testimonianza del fallimento dell'umanità. La premessa è già interessante. Ma per un po' sembrava che la "Black Box della Terra" non fosse nemmeno sopravvissuta al proprio processo di pianificazione.
Ora, cinque anni dopo che è stato annunciato con molta fanfara, seguito da anni di silenzio totale, la black box è tornata. Ed è bella grossa, se è per questo: una "barra" di 16 metri di lunghezza.
I suoi creatori dicono che l'assemblaggio delle parti è in corso e, a dicembre, il monolite completo sarà installato vicino a Queenstown ai margini di un remoto aeroporto della Tasmania occidentale. Perché proprio là? Boh.

La nuova versione 8 ha aggiunto la vista della struttura del documento, che si trova all'interno della lente di ingrandimento della ricerca. Poco intuitivo (fino a che non te lo dicono) ma molto interessante il modo con il quale funziona.

Fra le cose che forse non sapetec, Apple ha creato un sistema per aiutare le persone a usare il telefono (o il tablet, o il computer) mentre vanno in macchina o in altri mezzi di trasporto. Sono quei pallini che si muovono in concomitanza con il moto del mezzo di trasporto e, a quanto pare, funzionano per molti. Forse per tutti?

Se c'è una cosa che definisce Paul Graham, è essere non convenzionale. Una persona all'apparenza molto semplice, un programmatore diventato imprenditore che ha creato Y Combinator, cioè uno dei più importanti incubatori (il cui presidente è stato fino a poco tempo fa Sam Altman). Soprattutto, è un autore: ha scritto un libro fantastico (Hackers and Painters) che ho sempre davanti alla mia scrivania (anche adesso) e una tonnellata di saggi su un vecchio sito tutto fatto con html, molto minimalista.
Le sue idee non sono sempre "buone", anche perché negli anni ha scritto veramente tanto e la qualità cambia ovviamente. Però questo discorso per la Oxford Union su come si possa diventare miliardari in maniera etica (buona parte della politica sostiene che non sia possibile guadagnare così tanti soldi senza fare qualcosa di male) è molto interessante. Parziale, furbo, in qualche modo sbagliato, ma interessante.
