As nominations on Kusama continue to increase, there have been some limitations with the current staking parameters. To prevent issues from occurring, some restrictions are being added to the staking system:
• Max. 20,000 nominators; min. stake .1 KSM.

After winning the second parachain auction, Moonriver is now being onboarded as Kusama‘s third parachain. Roughly 6,000 network stakeholders locked up KSM in favor of Moonriver being added to Kusama.

Parachain auctions are a central feature of both Kusama and Polkadot. Their outcome determines who gets which parachain slots and the amount of tokens locked. For the health of the ecosystem, it is important that the scarce slots are allocated to those projects that can make most use of them.

Until now Statemine has been running with limited functionality. After a performance review and audit, the Kusama Council proposed an upgrade to remove the restrictions. Today the referendum passed authorizing an upgrade to make Statemine permissionless.

Since successfully adding Statemine, Karura, Moonriver, Shiden, Khala, and Bifrost to Kusama, it's been closely monitored for candidate production stability, approval voting statistics, and network connectivity load.
Overall Kusama is running smoothly, and paving the way for parachains on Polkadot - after a little more soɐɥɔ.

Rococo, the parachain testnet that laid the groundwork for parachains on Kusama and Polkadot, now evolves into a community-maintained parachain testbed. Learn about the upcoming Rococo revamp and what it means for parachain teams: https://bit.ly/3FSA6Y3
From Sept 1st - Oct 13th, 16 teams registered parachains and opened crowdloans in hopes of winning one of the parachain slots. Although the initial motion was to allocate 5 parachain slots, after some discussion within the community, the council scheduled an additional auction. OpenGov, enabling an even more decentralized governance on the network, has been enacted on Kusama after Referendum 244 was passed, upgrading the runtime to v9320. OpenGov removes the “first-class citizens” of the Council and Technical Committee, replacing them with a new Fellowship to enable much broader participation in the governance process.

OpenGov allows every decision in the network to be made as a result of referenda tabled by the community - and for the first time multiple referenda can run simultaneously, enabling more motions to be passed more quickly. To enable the smooth adoption of OpenGov, the Collectives parachain has launched on Polkadot. This provides a home for the Fellowship among numerous other “common-good” collectives.

Initially referred to as Gov2 when outlined by Gavin Wood at Polkadot Decoded earlier this year, OpenGov is also projected to go live on Polkadot in due course. To learn more: https://kusa.ma/cBdYV
