Southwest Boeing 737 Max makes emergency landing in Orlando; FAA cites issue unrelated to recent crashes

#FL: The crew of a SouthwestAirlines #Boeing 737 Max declared an emergency shortly after takeoff and returned to #Orlando's main airport on Tuesday after reporting an engine problem, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The #FAA grounded this type of aircraft earlier this month following two fatal crashes of the popular model.

Airlines aren't allowed to fly passengers under the FAA's order. The Southwest plane, which was not carrying passengers, was bound for Victorville, #CA, where the carrier is storing the aircraft in a facility in the western Mojave Desert.

The FAA on 3/13 grounded the planes, following the crash of #EthiopianAirlines Flight 302, a Boeing 737 Max 8. All 157 passengers on board were killed and investigators said the crash had "clear similarities" with a #LionAir flight, operated by the same type of plane, plunged into the Java Sea in #Indonesia, killing the 189 people on board.
Boeing shareholders sue over 737 MAX crashes, disclosures

#Boeing’s legal troubles grew on Tuesday as a new lawsuit accused the company of defrauding shareholders by concealing safety deficiencies in its 737 MAX planes before two fatal crashes led to their worldwide grounding. The proposed class action filed in #Chicago federal court seeks damages for alleged securities fraud violations, after Boeing’s market value tumbled by $34 billion within two weeks of the March 10 crash of an #EthiopianAirlines 737 MAX.

Chief Executive #DennisMuilenburg and CFO #GregorySmith were also named as defendants. Boeing spokesman #CharlesBickers had no immediate comment.
Pilots 'raised Boeing safety fears' months before Ethiopia crash

They urged swift action after the first deadly 737 Max crash off Indonesia in October. #Boeing reportedly resisted their calls but promised a software fix. But this had not been rolled out when an #EthiopianAirlines' 737 Max crashed four months later, killing 157 people.

Currently 737 Max planes are grounded worldwide amid concerns that an anti-stall system may have contributed to both crashes. Boeing is in the process of updating the system, known as MCAS, but denies it was solely to blame for the disasters.

In a closed door meeting with Boeing executives last November, which was secretly recorded, #AmericanAirlines' pilots can be heard expressing concerns about the safety of MCAS. Boeing VP #MikeSinnett told the pilots: "No one has yet to conclude that the sole cause of this was this function on the airplane."
