Man confronts Russian ambassador about poison attack that killed girlfriend
A #UK man exposed to a deadly nerve agent that killed his girlfriend confronted the #Russia'n ambassador Sunday about the attack. Novichok-gas survivor Charlie Rowley, 45, said he went into the meeting with #AlexanderYakovenko with a burning question: “Why did your country kill my girlfriend?
“But I didn’t really get any answers. I just got Russian propaganda,” Rowley told the Mirror UK, which organized the 90-minute sit-down at the Russian embassy. “The ambassador kept saying the substance definitely wasn’t the Novichok they had made because if it was, it would have killed everyone,” Rowley said.

Julian Assange Charged by U.S. With Conspiracy to Hack a Government Computer
#UK: The #US has charged #WikiLeaks founder #JulianAssange with one count of conspiracy to #Hack a computer related to his role in the 2010 release of reams of secret American documents, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Thursday just hours after British authorities arrested him in #London.
The single charge, conspiracy to commit computer intrusion, stems from what prosecutors said was his agreement to break a password to a classified US government computer. It is not an espionage charge, a significant detail that will come as a relief to press freedom advocates. The US government had considered until at least last year charging him with an espionage-related offense.
Mr. Assange, 47, has been living at the #Ecuador'ean Embassy in London since 2012. British authorities arrested him after he was evicted by the Ecuadoreans.

Ecuador's president says Assange tried to use its embassy to spy
#WikiLeaks founder #JulianAssange repeatedly violated his asylum conditions and tried to use the #Ecuador'ian embassy in #London as a center for spying, Ecuador’s President #LeninMoreno told #UK’s #Guardian newspaper. London police dragged Assange out of the embassy on Thursday after his seven-year asylum was revoked, paving the way for his extradition to the United States for one of the biggest ever leaks of classified information.
Assange’s relationship with his hosts collapsed after Ecuador accused him of leaking information about Moreno’s personal life. Moreno denied to the Guardian that he had acted as a reprisal for the way in which documents about his family had been leaked. He said he regretted that Assange had used the embassy to interfere in other country’s democracies.

Amazon flooded with thousands of potentially fake reviews
#Amazon is inundated with tens of thousands of “potentially fake” five-star product reviews, a #UK consumer group claims. Of the hundreds of tech products analyzed by the group Which?, “many have a raft of five star customer ratings and thousands of glowing reviews, and many of these are from unverified purchasers – all telltale signs of ‘fake’ reviews,” the group said.
Hundreds of five-star, unverified reviews were left on products in a single day, the group found. Which? searched Amazon for 14 different technology products, including cameras, headphones and smart-watches, “and found that some appear to be far more heavily targeted by potentially fake reviews and ‘unknown’ brands – companies our tech experts had never heard of.”

Bombs tear through Sri Lankan churches and hotels, killing more than 200 people
The calm of Easter Sunday was shattered by gruesome bombings that killed at least 207 people in #SriLanka'n churches and hotels. Though it's not clear who's behind the eight explosions that forced the country of 21 million people to go on lockdown, they are "certainly acts of terror," said Manisha Gunasekera, high commissioner of Sri Lanka to the #UK.
An intelligence memo warning of a possible attack had circulated 10 days earlier, raising questions about whether more preventative measures could have been taken. "Serious action need to be taken as to why this warning was ignored," Sri Lanka's Minister of Telecommunications, Harin Fernando, tweeted along with a photo of the memo. The document, titled "Information of an alleged plan attack," is dated April 11 and signed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Priyalal Dissanayake.

Whales trained by Russia's military may be harassing fishermen from NATO ally Norway
Norwegian fishermen and scientists say a white whale wearing a strange harness that harassed boats in the Arctic recently may have been trained by #Russia's military. Russia has previously acknowledged training sea mammals for special operations in the frigid Arctic, where the country has a major military base not far from the territory of key #NATO member #Norway.
According to #UK's #TheGuardian newspaper, Norwegian state broadcaster NRK reported the unusual behavior of the animal last week and showed video of the beluga whale swimming alongside a fishing vessel and repeatedly nudging it. "We were going to put out nets when we saw a whale swimming between the boats," NRK quoted fisherman Joar Hesten as saying. "It came over to us, and as it approached, we saw that it had some sort of harness on it."

Julian Assange: Wikileaks co-founder jailed over bail breach
#Wikileaks co-founder #JulianAssange has been sentenced to 50 weeks in jail for breaching his bail conditions. The 47-year-old was found guilty of breaching the Bail Act last month after his arrest at the #Ecuador'ian Embassy. He took refuge in the #London embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to #Sweden over sexual assault allegations, which he has denied.
In a letter read to the court, Assange said he had found himself "struggling with difficult circumstances". He apologised to those who "consider I've disrespected them", a packed Southwark Crown Court heard.
"I did what I thought at the time was the best or perhaps the only thing that I could have done," he said.
In sentencing him, Judge Deborah Taylor told Assange it was difficult to envisage a more serious example of the offence. "By hiding in the embassy you deliberately put yourself out of reach, while remaining in the #UK," she said.

Anti-vaxxers 'have blood on their hands,' says UK health secretary
The #UK's health secretary #MattHancock said anti-vaccination campaigners were "morally reprehensible, deeply irresponsible" and had "blood on their hands," in an interview with The Times published Saturday.
His comments came days after a study by #UNICEF, the #UN's children's agency, found that #Measles deaths were up globally by 22% in 2017, and complacency and fear of vaccines were among the factors leading to less vaccinations.
Speaking the same day on #BBC Radio 4's Today program, Hancock said the UK needed to "consider all options" to ensure more children were vaccinated, refusing to rule out the possibility of compulsory vaccination.

White House says it won't sign international agreement to combat online extremism
The #US says it supports an international effort to find ways to stop social media from spreading hate — but won't take part in it. In a statement issued Wednesday, the #WhiteHouse praised the call to action in the name of #Christchurch being spearheaded by #NewZealand Prime Minister #JacindaArdern and #France President #EmmanuelMacron. "The United States stands with the international community in condemning terrorist and violent extremist content online in the strongest terms," the White House said, but added that it is "not currently in a position to join the endorsement."
That makes the US an outlier. Allies including the #UK, #Japan, #Australia, #Italy, #India, #Germany and #Spain are all listed as signing on to the effort. Numerous technology giants are involved as well, including #Amazon, #Facebook, #Google, #Twitter and #YouTube.

#Uk: A fearless group of people walked into the crowd at a pro-Palestinian rally in London holding a sign that said “Hamas is terrorist”
#UK:
Boris Johnson Joins London March Against Antisemitism
Tens of thousands of demonstrators, some waving Israeli and British flags, marched against antisemitism through central London on Sunday. The protest, which unconfirmed reports claimed drew over 100,000 people, came a day after large pro-Palestinian crowds took to the streets of Britain’s capital to demand a full ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.
The UK has seen a spike in antisemitic incidents since the unprecedented deadly Hamas onslaught in Israel on October 7 unleashed war in the Gaza Strip. “The hate has got to disappear. You can’t have hate on either side,” 69-year-old retiree Michael Jennings told AFP, as the march began outside the Royal Courts of Justice.
Demonstrators, who were joined by ex-prime minister Boris Johnson, held posters that read “Zero tolerance for antisemitism” as they walked to parliament.
