Europe just passed sweeping new copyright rules that Big Tech hates

Europe is changing the internet again.

Lawmakers have approved a sweeping overhaul of copyright rules, dealing a blow to major tech companies that argued the changes will be costly and limit free expression. The European Parliament voted Tuesday to approve fiercely contested changes that make platforms such as #YouTube responsible for copyright infringements committed by their users. Sites like #Google News could also be required to pay publishers for using snippets of their content.

The proposal was opposed by tech companies, which warned they would need to build expensive content filters and stop linking to publications. Internet activists argued that the changes would lead to censorship. On the other side of the two-year battle were record labels, artists and media companies. They said reforms were needed to update copyright protections for the internet age and to ensure they're fairly paid for content.

EU Rejects US Call for Huawei Ban

The European Commission said today that #EU nations will work together to assess and prevent security risks associated with #5G networks. In doing so, the EU has effectively rejected demands from the #US that it ban #Huawei and other Chinese companies from participating in these networks.

“The European Commission recommended today a set of concrete actions to assess cybersecurity risks of 5G networks and to strengthen preventive measures,” an EC announcement reads. “The recommendations are a combination of legislative and policy instruments meant to protect our economies, societies and democratic systems … 5G is a key asset for Europe to compete in the global market and its cybersecurity is crucial for ensuring the strategic autonomy of the Union.”

The EC’s recommendations include requiring each member state to complete a national risk assessment of 5G network infrastructures by the end of June and then update their security requirements for network providers.
European parliament votes to scrap daylight saving time from 2021

The #Europe'an parliament has voted to scrap the twice-a-year custom of changing the clocks by an hour in spring and autumn by 2021, leaving only national governments to now give their assent.

The change would apply to the UK if it stays in the #EU, and also during an extended transition period that is part of #TheresaMay’s #Brexit deal.

Member states would be able to choose whether to remain on “permanent summer” or “permanent winter” time under the draft directive, which passed by 410 votes to 192.
Europe slams 'exaggerated' US tariff threat and prepares to retaliate

The #EU has hit back at new #US proposals to target #Europe'an goods with tariffs, following a #WTO ruling over subsidies for #Airbus. Trade tensions between the EU and US flared Monday after the US said it's considering $11 billion worth of retaliatory tariffs on a range of goods in response to illegal subsidies the EU granted to the aerospace firm.

The WTO ruled last year that these allowances had caused "adverse effects" to the US, with the decision coming after a long-running litigation battle between the Washington and Brussels over their respective aviation giants. Shares of Airbus were trading 2.3% lower Tuesday after the tariffs were proposed. A spokesman for the company said there is no legal basis for the U.S. move to impose sanctions, and said the EU had complied with WTO rulings. The European Commission criticized the proposals.
UK Prime Minister Theresa May resigning after Brexit failures

#TheresaMay announced Friday that will step down as #UK Conservative Party leader on June 7, sparking a contest to become Britain’s next prime minister.

She will stay as caretaker prime minister until the new leader is chosen, a process likely to take several weeks. The new Conservative leader would then become prime minister without the need for a general election.

Her voice breaking, May said in a televised statement that she would be leaving a job that it has been “the honor of my life to hold.”

May has bowed to relentless pressure from her party to quit over her failure to take Britain out of the #EU on schedule.
