Europe just passed sweeping new copyright rules that Big Tech hates

Europe is changing the internet again.

Lawmakers have approved a sweeping overhaul of copyright rules, dealing a blow to major tech companies that argued the changes will be costly and limit free expression. The European Parliament voted Tuesday to approve fiercely contested changes that make platforms such as #YouTube responsible for copyright infringements committed by their users. Sites like #Google News could also be required to pay publishers for using snippets of their content.

The proposal was opposed by tech companies, which warned they would need to build expensive content filters and stop linking to publications. Internet activists argued that the changes would lead to censorship. On the other side of the two-year battle were record labels, artists and media companies. They said reforms were needed to update copyright protections for the internet age and to ensure they're fairly paid for content.

White House says it won't sign international agreement to combat online extremism

The #US says it supports an international effort to find ways to stop social media from spreading hate — but won't take part in it. In a statement issued Wednesday, the #WhiteHouse praised the call to action in the name of #Christchurch being spearheaded by #NewZealand Prime Minister #JacindaArdern and #France President #EmmanuelMacron. "The United States stands with the international community in condemning terrorist and violent extremist content online in the strongest terms," the White House said, but added that it is "not currently in a position to join the endorsement."

That makes the US an outlier. Allies including the #UK, #Japan, #Australia, #Italy, #India, #Germany and #Spain are all listed as signing on to the effort. Numerous technology giants are involved as well, including #Amazon, #Facebook, #Google, #Twitter and #YouTube.
Google suspends some business with Huawei after Trump blacklist

#Alphabet Inc’s #Google has suspended business with #Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware and software products except those covered by open source licenses, a source close to the matter told #Reuters on Sunday, in a blow to the Chinese technology company that the #US government has sought to blacklist around the world.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the #Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of #China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the #GooglePlayStore and #Gmail app.

Details of the specific services were still being discussed internally at Google, according to the source. Huawei attorneys are also studying the impact of the U.S. Commerce Department’s actions, a Huawei spokesman said on Friday. Huawei was not immediately reachable for further comment.

Facebook says the doctored Nancy Pelosi video used to question her mental state and viewed millions of times will stay up

#Facebook has decided to keep an altered video of House Speaker #NancyPelosi on its site that makes her speech appear slow and slurred. Commenters, including President #DonaldTrump’s personal attorney #RudyGiuliani, have used the video to call into question Pelosi’s competence and mental state.

In a since-deleted tweet, Giuliani shared a link to the altered video and wrote, “What is wrong with Nancy Pelosi? Her speech pattern is bizarre.” Giuliani later appeared to apologize on #Twitter for sharing the video.

Meanwhile, #Google-owned #YouTube removed the video from its platform.
