Trump cancels hours-old sanctions on North Korea

President #DonaldTrump undercut his own Treasury Department on Friday with a sudden announcement that he had rolled back newly imposed #NorthKorea #Sanctions, appearing to overrule national security experts as a favor to #KimJongUn, the North Korean leader.

The move, announced on #Twitter, was a remarkable display of dissension within the Trump administration. It created confusion at the highest levels of the federal government, just as the president’s aides were seeking to pressure North Korea into returning to negotiations over dismantling its #Nuclear weapons program. “It was announced today by the U.S. Treasury that additional large scale Sanctions would be added to those already existing Sanctions on North Korea,” Mr. Trump tweeted. “I have today ordered the withdrawal of those additional Sanctions!”

The Treasury Department announced new sanctions on Friday against Iran and #Venezuela, but not North Korea.

US Seizes North Korean Ship for Violating Sanctions

The #US has seized a #NorthKorea'n shipping vessel that was violating American law and international sanctions, the #USDoJ announced Thursday, a move certain to escalate tensions already on the rise because of recent North Korean weapons tests.

Prosecutors said the carrier ship, the Wise Honest, was being used to export North Korean coal, a critical sector of the North’s economy that the United States and the #UN have aggressively imposed sanctions on in an effort to force Pyongyang to end its #Nuclear weapons program. The ship was also being used to import heavy machinery.

It was the first time the United States has seized a North Korean cargo vessel for international #Sanctions violations, the Justice Department said. Officials said the seizure is part of a broad plan to enforce the international sanctions and ultimately pressure North Korea to dismantle its nuclear program.
North Korea demands return of cargo ship seized by US

#NorthKorea has called the #US seizure of a North Korean cargo ship involved in banned coal exports an "unlawful robbery" and demanded the ship to be immediately returned. Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency on Tuesday carried a statement by an unnamed foreign ministry spokesman who accused the United States of betraying the spirit of a summit agreement last June between North Korean leader #KimJongUn and President #DonaldTrump.

Kim and Trump then agreed to a vague statement calling for a #Nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and improved bilateral ties. Their second meeting collapsed in February over mismatched demands in #Sanctions relief and disarmament. The "Wise Honest" was detained in April 2018 as it traveled toward #Indonesia and arrived in #AmericanSamoa on Saturday.
The US military is exploring a plan to deploy 120,000 troops to the Middle East as tensions with Iran intensify

The #USArmy briefed President #DonaldTrump's national-security aides on a revamped plan that could result in the deployment of up to 120,000 troops to the #MiddleEast, according to national-security officials cited in a #NewYorkTimes report published Monday.

The reported plan calls for the deployment of troops in the event that Iran either attacks #US forces or ramps up its #Nuclear-weapons program. The plan does not indicate whether US troops would invade #Iran, the newspaper said. The number of troops deployed to the Middle East would be close to the roughly 130,600 service members deployed to #Iraq in 2003.

US intercepts Russian bombers, fighter jets off the coast of Alaska

#US #F22 stealth jets intercepted four Russian bombers and two Russian Su-35 fighter jets off the coast of #AK on Monday, according to a statement from #NORAD. The Russian #Nuclear capable long-range bombers flew into the Air Defense Identification Zone (#ADIZ), which extends approximately 200 miles off Alaska's western coast. The Russian bomber flights are seen by US military officials as part of Moscow's effort to train its military for a potential crisis while simultaneously sending a message of strength to adversaries.

This latest intercept comes amid tensions with #Russia on a wide range of geopolitical issues and a week after Secretary of State #MikePompeo met Russian #VladimirPutin in the resort town of Sochi where he warned Russia about interfering in US elections, taking a tougher public line than President #DonaldTrump on the issue.
North Korea executes nuclear envoy to U.S. after failed Trump summit

#NorthKorea executed its special #Nuclear envoy to the #US as part of a purge of senior officials over the failed summit between leader #KimJongUn and President #DonaldTrump, #SouthKorea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper claimed Friday.

Kim Hyok Chol was executed by firing squad in March along with four other foreign ministry officials, the paper reported, citing an unidentified North Korean source.

North Korea neither confirmed nor denied the report. South Korea's government was not able to confirm the claim. Previous media reports about the fate of North Korean officials who have fallen afoul of Pyongyang's leader have proven to be false.

Chosun Ilbo is one of South Korea's largest daily newspapers. However, it's notoriously difficult to get information out of North Korea because it closely guards secrets.
