Elon Musk and his girlfriend Grimes welcomed a second child, a girl, in December 2021, the latter told culture magazine Vanity Fair in an interview and everybody is curious what her name will be.

The duo made headlines in 2020 when their firstborn was named X Γ† A-12. While it had raised many eyebrows, the parents were quite open to sharing the rationale behind the name. While Musk shared it with the listeners of the Joe Rogan podcast, Grimes took to Twitter to reach out to anyone who was seeking an answer to the strange name.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have claimed roughly 18 million lives worldwide, more than three times the official death toll, according to a new estimate.
According to an analysis published in the Lancet by a team of health researchers, the higher figure represents a better approximation of the true worldwide casualty figure through the end of 2021.

The researchers say the true number of lives lost to the COVID-19 by 31 December 2021 was 18.2 million, which vastly outnumbers the 5.9 million deaths reported by various official sources for the same time span.

It's not life on Mars, but it does bear a slight resemblance.
NASA's Curiosity rover spotted a rock formation in the shape of a flower during its ongoing wanderings around the red planet's Gale Crater.
The flower-like formation is as small as a penny, a blog post from NASA reveals.

Curiosity captured the image of the rock formation on February 24 with the Mars Hand Lens Imager, which is located on its robotic arm. According to the U.S. space agency, the rock likely formed into its curious shape "in the ancient past when minerals carried by water cemented the rock."

For four decades, the U.S. Navy had not designed a new aircraft carrier. So, when it took up the task of building the Ford-class carriers, the Navy ensured that it was building the best aircraft carrier it had built so far. The first of its kind, USS Gerald Ford is now closer to taking to the battlefield with some of the most advanced technologies we have seen on a warship.

Honoring Gerald Ford who served the U.S. Navy during World War II, the first vessel of this class of aircraft carriers has been named after the 38th President of the United States. Instead of making incremental changes to its new warship, the Navy spent a good amount of money and time to bring on board the latest technological developments.

A new study is revealing that a reversal in the Earth's magnetic poles 42,000 to 41,000 years ago may have led to environmental crises that resulted in mass extinctions. The period is called the Laschamps excursion and the research used precise carbon dating obtained from ancient tree fossils to study its effects.
The team details how they created a precise radiocarbon record around the time of the "Laschamps geomagnetic reversal about 41,000 years ago from the rings of New Zealand swamp kauri trees."

"This record reveals a substantial increase in the carbon-14 content of the atmosphere culminating during the period of weakening magnetic field strength preceding the polarity switch." The team concluded that the "geomagnetic field minimum caused substantial changes in atmospheric ozone concentration that drove synchronous global climate and environmental" with their model investigating the consequences of this event.

Algae has such immense potential as a biofuel source that scientists have long been studying it for sustainable energy. They even created 3D printed artificial leaves out of algae to produce oxygen for our investigations of Mars.

Now, scientists from Texas A&M AgriLife Research are using artificial intelligence to break a new world record for producing algae as a reliable biofuel source, so that a greener and more economical fuel source for jet aircraft and other kinds of transportation could be achieved. The research project is conducted by Joshua Yuan, PhD., and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Fossil Energy Office.

NASA's JPL Caltech science team has spent years analyzing and researching data about Mars. The hope is that there is life beneath the Red Planet's surface and that this will further scientists' understanding of planetary evolution and, ultimately, of our galaxy.

In an interview with Interesting Engineering, Jesse Tarnas, a planetary scientist at JPL Caltech and NASA post-doctoral fellow, discussed where we currently are in the search for life on Mars, the future of Martian habitation, and what that means for us here on Earth.
Tarnas explained that part of his motivation comes from, "The idea of us living in a future where humans are collectively inhabiting Earth in a much more honorable and sustainable way." He believes that many of the ways this could be possible, and how we could learn to do so, come from exploring space, and from learning to inhabit other planets, like Mars.

Last February, the β€˜Ghost of Kyiv’ was already making headlines with claims of bringing down five Russian planes and a helicopter. Since then his supposed tally has allegedly grown to include 49 Russian planes.
On Friday, Ukraine's air force shared a selfie of the famous pilot with a cryptic message.
"Hello, occupier, I’m flying for your soul!” says the picture's caption with the pilot seen drawing attention to one of the missiles attached to his jet.

In the brain, a neural network is a circuit of neurons linked through chemical and/or electrical impulses. Neurons use these signals to communicate with each other in order to perform a certain function or action, for example, carrying out a cognitive task such as thinking, remembering, and learning.

The neuron sends out an electrical signal through its axon or nerve fiber. The end of the axon has many branches, called dendrites. When the signal reaches the dendrites, chemicals called neurotransmitters are released into the gap between cells. The cells on the other side of the gap contain receptors where the neurotransmitters bind to trigger changes in the cells.
Sometimes neurotransmitters cause an electrical signal to be transmitted down the receiving cell. Others can block the signal from continuing, preventing the message from being carried on to other nerve cells.

The recombinant variant, Deltacron, composed of the two highly transmissible COVID variants, Delta and Omicron, has been confirmed by the global community of scientists.

The variant was first reported earlier this year by researchers at the University of Cyprus and was the subject was much scientific debate around that time. Many researchers had rejected the possibility that the two variants had managed to combine in a fashion that they still held signatures of their past. Instead, critics had called the finding a result of contamination in the lab.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have proposed a new theory to explain how oxygen concentration might have built up in the Earth's atmosphere, according to a press release.

Billions of years before the first humans were born, the Earth's atmosphere lacked the oxygen we need to survive. Some microbial organisms were using photosynthesis to generate some oxygen, however, the amounts produced were not sufficient to support many lifeforms. Around 2.3 billion years ago, though, the oxygen levels began to build up in the atmosphere, but the reasons for the same and still unknown.
