The quality of the chromosomes and DNA contained within each egg declines as women age, which is why the average 20-year-old has an 86 percent chance of becoming pregnant, whereas this drops to 36 percent for a 40-year-old.
That, however, may be about to change. Now, a team of researchers from Hebrew University in Israel has demonstrated that treating eggs with an anti-viral medicine can "reverse" the age of older eggs.
The โreverse agedโ eggs apparently had chromosomes that look more like those from younger eggs, less damaged DNA, and they matured better in test tubes.
The development hasn't been tested against fertilization; however, it may provide hope for women over 40 wanting to be mothers by extending childbearing into middle age.

According to an analysis published in the Lancet by a team of health researchers, the higher figure represents a better approximation of the true worldwide casualty figure through the end of 2021.

It's not life on Mars, but it does bear a slight resemblance.
NASA's Curiosity rover spotted a rock formation in the shape of a flower during its ongoing wanderings around the red planet's Gale Crater.
The flower-like formation is as small as a penny, a blog post from NASA reveals.
Curiosity captured the image of the rock formation on February 24 with the Mars Hand Lens Imager, which is located on its robotic arm. According to the U.S. space agency, the rock likely formed into its curious shape "in the ancient past when minerals carried by water cemented the rock."

The period is called the Laschamps excursion and the research used precise carbon dating obtained from ancient tree fossils to study its effects.
The team details how they created a precise radiocarbon record around the time of the "Laschamps geomagnetic reversal about 41,000 years ago from the rings of New Zealand swamp kauri trees."
"This record reveals a substantial increase in the carbon-14 content of the atmosphere culminating during the period of weakening magnetic field strength preceding the polarity switch." The team concluded that the "geomagnetic field minimum caused substantial changes in atmospheric ozone concentration that drove synchronous global climate and environmental" with their model investigating the consequences of this event.

NASA's JPL Caltech science team has spent years analyzing and researching data about Mars. The hope is that there is life beneath the Red Planet's surface and that this will further scientists' understanding of planetary evolution and, ultimately, of our galaxy.
In an interview with Interesting Engineering, Jesse Tarnas, a planetary scientist at JPL Caltech and NASA post-doctoral fellow, discussed where we currently are in the search for life on Mars, the future of Martian habitation, and what that means for us here on Earth.
