The new Android Photo Picker will work in apps that do not support it.

Among other features of Android 13, Google has added a new system Photo Picker tool, which was backported to all Android 11 & 12 devices via Google Play System Update for May 2022. Although it only requires a few lines of code to implement this feature, it can take a long time for apps to adapt it.

That's why Google decided to bring the benefits of Android Photo Picker to existing apps using ACTION_GET_CONTENT. If app launch the ACTION_GET_CONTENT intent with an image and/or video mime type filter, the photo picker will be shown instead of the document picker. This does not require any changes on the application side.

This change will appear in the coming months.

Android 13’s audio output switcher will soon show cast devices!

Currently, the only playback devices that could be listed in the output switcher included the current device and any paired Bluetooth devices. But with the Google Cast SDK update and the new Android 13 'Stream Expansion' feature, you will be able to expand the audio to multiple cast devices.

Originally, the feature was introduced back in Android 11, but then disabled *for some reason*. And now, it looks like Google will bring it to back with the Android 13 remote playback system API.

But besides that, there has to be support from the app side, so if you're an app developer, I highly recommend checking out Mishaal Rahman's article on Esper:

YouTube app on iOS has added new homescreen widgets.

The 4×2 "Quick Actions" widget is "the fastest way to search and browse YouTube." There's a "Search YouTube " bar at the top, which immediately launches the UI with an open keyboard, and a microphone icon brings up voice search. Then there are "Home," "Shorts" and "Subscriptions" buttons to immediately open the appropriate sections.

There's also a 2×2 "Search" widget, which also has a black or white background (depending on the system theme).

It's all good, of course, but when will it appear on Android? 🧐

🇬🇧 Google intentionally turned off the ongoing call chip (but temporary) In Android 12 Google introduced a new "chip" in the status bar, which appeared when exiting the call interface and displayed call duration. It served as a replacement for the calling…
Ongoing call chip is back!

Previously, Google intentionally turned off this feature for the Google Phone app by reverting to the floating bubble. Thus, the chip in the status bar could only be seen when calling in third-party apps such as Meet or Telegram.

However, starting in the second half of the summer, users slowly began to get the chip back. And now it has started to roll out to everyone. In addition, a couple of days ago, Google even officially reported on fixing the problem on Issue Tracker.

The Ongoing call chip in the status bar is also accompanied by the return of an updated notification.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I created a bug report about painting the navigation bar in the new In Call UI, so, open this link and tap +1 to support the report.

YouTube Music on Android rolls out a redesign of its playlist pages Earlier this design appeared on tablets, and now it's available on phones as well. Now the cover art is located in the middle, with its blur version in the background. Below are the buttons…
YouTube Music's new Playlists page UI is rolling out more widely.

A similar change was previously reported back in June. The playlist cover is now centered, with a blurry version behind it.
The "download," "edit," "play," "share," and "more" buttons are now located in a row just below the playlist title and description.

The Shuffle play button has moved to the "more" menu (three dots button).

The album pages remained unchanged, at least for now.

Google has improved the productivity in Chrome on Android tablets.

• Chrome will hide the close button when tabs get too small.
• Browsing through open tabs will become easier with a grid-like list opening with a preview, which helps you navigate through them with fewer taps.
• You can now drag and drop images, text, and links that interest you from Chrome and paste them into another app, like Gmail, Photos, or Keep.
• If you suddenly don't feel comfortable using the mobile version of a site, you able to have Chrome always request and load the desktop version for a particular site.

Google reallocates its resources amid Apple's growing market share in the U.S.

1) Amid Apple hitting an all-time high in U.S. market share, Google is "doubling down" on its investment in Pixel hardware to halt Samsung's "further decline.

Apparently, Google is doing this by moving product development and software engineering staff working on features for non-Google hardware to work on Google-branded devices.

2) Google sees Apple as a bigger problem than in the past, thanks to fears that regulators could shut down the multibillion-dollar agreement between Google and Apple to put Google Search on iPhones. If iPhones stop showing Google ads, Apple's rise and Samsung's fall is one of the few things that could be a serious problem for Google's revenue.

3) Some product managers working on Google TV software for TVs will be moved to Wear OS and Pixel Tablet directions.

4) Google is going to "invest less in developing its Google Assistant voice-assisted search for cars and for devices not made by Google, including TVs, headphones, smart-home speakers, smart glasses and smartwatches that use Google’s Wear OS software." It looks like partners will get fewer features and Pixel devices more and more exclusives.

5) Google is not abandoning its partners, it has "Google has singled out Samsung and Chinese brands OnePlus and Xiaomi as premium Android phone partners for which it should develop the best Google services. But that leaves a long list of other manufacturers that may not get the same attention from Google groups like the Assistant team."

🇬🇧 Google Photos has officially announced a more sortable library tab and a new "import photos" section. The updated library tab, which we discovered earlier, is a grid, with the ability to sort by type (albums, shared albums, favorites, folders on the device).…
Google Photos rolls out an updated Library page.

It looks like Google has abandoned the previous redesign announced in the spring after all. Instead, it left a separate carousel for photos on the device, but still moved the Locked Folder, Utilities, Archive (soon will be renamed to 'Hidden') and Trash buttons to the bottom of the page as a list.

A more flexible album sorting tool has been added which also now allows you to choose to display All, Your or Shared albums and select a grid or list view.

The button for creating a new album is now in the shape of a pill and is located at the level of the sort button (previously it was presented as an album tile).
