How Russia is stealing Ukrainian coal from Mariupol

While the world's attention is focused on the frontline, large-scale looting is taking place in the rear - Russia is massively exporting Ukrainian coal from occupied Mariupol to feed its army.

Mariupol, which was an important industrial and port city in Ukraine before the invasion, has become a point of export for coking coal, a fuel that is essential for steel production. And steel is used by Russia to make tanks, shells and armoured vehicles.

Only five ships have exported more than 120,000 tonnes of coal from the port of Mariupol. This is about $25 million in terms of market value. But the main thing is that it is raw material for the war.

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine reports that the ships carrying Ukrainian coal have specific names and specifications

The maths is sad, because 120,000 tonnes of coking coal equals more than 140,000 tonnes of steel or up to 1,000 pieces of military equipment. Or hundreds of thousands of artillery shells.

There is a state looting with elements of military logistics with the participation of Nika Shipping LLC, registered in Donetsk + Krechet LLC, a logistics operator, Rostov-on-Don + Alpha LLC, owner of the ALPHA HERMES ship + Sibmarket LLC, which controls two ships, registered in Irkutsk. The insurers are Russian companies VSK and Yugoria.

The use of the natural resources of the occupied territories for one's own benefit is prohibited by international law. This is contrary to the Hague Convention of 1907, Geneva Convention IV (1949) and UN Resolution 3314 on acts of aggression.

In fact, what Russia is doing with coal is nothing short of economic looting. However, the world prefers to turn a blind eye to all this and only occasionally react to missile attacks on civilians in Ukraine

Every tonne of coal from Mariupol means another missile, another tank, another shelling of Ukraine. If we do not stop this route now, tomorrow it will become a red line covered with the blood of Ukrainians
