Rather than empowering users to access the services they need in a secure and safe way, the #eIDWallet risks becoming a tool of surveillance and control.

EDRi, @epicenter_works@chaos.social and other digital rights and consumer protection organisations across Europe wrote to the @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu Commission to urge them to amend their plan and ensure that the rights of users are properly safeguarded.

Apparently it is time to say it again: You aren’t helping or achieving anything by squatting onto github/gitlab/irc/etc to tell people, that you think age verification is a bad idea.

1. Nobody involved thinks the laws proposed in some US states are a good idea.

2. There is a more nuanced discussion to be had whether some form of standardized parental controls are, but technical forums aren’t the place to do that either and the situation is heated enough, that even the most socially skilled people aren’t in the mindset for nuanced anymore. (Congrats!)

3. Unfortunately a large part of the FOSS space is financed by companies, who want to continue selling hardware with Linux and we live in a society. So if this becomes law, something will have to give. The correct way to oppose this is by participating in the process. Vote, write to your representatives, etc. (Or viva la revolution, good luck)

4. All you are doing by writing in those pull requests is pilling onto the abuse some of the most burned out people in the industry already experience over this and other even stupider topics.

5. Figuring out the line to walk between designing something adequate to comply to different (existing and proposed, potentially conflicting) legislation and privacy is difficult and you are not doing anybody a favor by making the space to do this in collaboration transparently and openly hostile. Ending up with various different/non-standard stacks to do this would have even worse consequences.

6. If you actually have technical feedback and are up-to-date on all the relevant context, of course you are welcome to participate. But expect to do the work in that case, just complaining will again not help.

Jeez.. people, you aren’t doing better than the wayland haters. And no, just being on the right side of the general debate, doesn’t justify this shit.

So @xaitax@cyberplace.social has cracked Microsoft Recall, he's got access to the encrypted database and has automated dumping of screenshots and all text from screenshots.

I've looked at most recent Recall and yep, you can just read the database as a user process. The database also contains all manner of fields which aren't publicly disclosed for tracking the user's activity.

No AV or EDR alerts triggered, world's #1 in infostealer 😅

* you can just read it in plain text

I once stumbled on a Macbook repair YTer and was blown away by his presentation and diagnosis of a known GPU issue on a 2010 MBP.

@jerrej@mastodon.social noted:

Louis Rossmann! #louisrossmann

He’s still doing good work bringing attention to #ConsumerRightsWiki to categorize #enshittification practices.

Probably going to contribute Highland Pro app I ranted about recently.

A long and WELL sourced post on exactly who has been behind all the state level legislation aimed at OS level age verification.

"I traced $2 billion in nonprofit grants and 45 states of lobbying records to figure out who's behind the age verification bills. The answer involves a company that profits from your data writing laws that collect more of it."

2 days ago Transport Tycoon Deluxe (the original) got added to the GOG store.

Using a very misleading move GOG has now updated their OpenTTD page to list the original game as a requirement for playing OpenTTD.

This is not true at all. OpenTTD is a standalone game and does not require any files from the original game to work, it even replaces the original graphics.

Do not buy Transport Tycoon Deluxe from GOG. They charge 10 euro for it and it is simply the original game wrapped inside of DOSBox without any changes. Not worth your money.

Instead you should just simply download OpenTTD from the official download on openttd.org and play that instead.

And instead of giving your money to Atari/GOG you can donate money to the OpenTTD project directly. https://www.openttd.org/donate

Platea selezionata, luogo segreto e blindatissimo.
