Based on reports from January 17, 2026, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that U.S. forces conducted a strike in northwest Syria on Friday, January 16, 2026, killing Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, an al-Qaeda-affiliated leader. 
The strike was part of a broader, ongoing operation ordered by President Donald Trump to target ISIS-linked militants following a deadly December 13, 2025, ambush near Palmyra, Syria, that killed two U.S. Army soldiers and an American civilian interpreter.
