La misteriosa isola di Thule

L'antico viaggiatore greco Pitea fece un viaggio nel Nord Europa nel IV secolo a.C. e, al ritorno, raccontò per la prima volta ai suoi concittadini dell'isola di Tula.

Le sue storie su
l'aurora boreale, il mare con i blocchi di ghiaccio e la notte polare sembravano finzioni della popolazione. Così l'isola di Thule e altre "favole" di Pitea furono dimenticate per secoli.

Quando i Vichinghi scoprirono l'Islanda nel IX secolo, confrontarono le caratteristiche naturali e geografiche del paesaggio con la descrizione dell'isola di Thule, divenne chiaro che l'Islanda era la stessa isola mitica che Pitea aveva visitato una volta.

Very interesting bit of Youth reading for the 1893 Chicago World's fair. There are some beautiful images in the book and perhaps a bit of propaganda for the youths attending the start of the new world on display. Fascinating the amount of verbiage and details for a youths book. Maybe the youth were a bit more developed during that period than we have been led to believe.
