Executive Order 6102, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 5, 1933, prohibited the hoarding of gold, requiring most U.S. citizens to surrender their gold holdings to the Federal Reserve for paper currency at a fixed rate of $20.67 per ounce. This measure aimed to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression by allowing the government to print more money and stabilize the monetary supply. The ban on private gold ownership was lifted by President Gerald Ford in 1974.

Gold, silver, and copper are the first three "coinage metals" from Group 11 of the periodic table, known for their natural occurrence in elemental form, high density, and resistance to corrosion, leading to their historical and ongoing use in jewelry, coins, and industrial applications, especially in electronics. Copper is the most common, while gold and silver are precious metals, each with distinct colors—gold is yellow and copper is reddish-orange—that result from their unique atomic structures.
