The campaign for the statue's removal led to a wider movement to "decolonise" education across South Africa. At a certain point burning of the artworks began with a protestor calling the artworks “symbols of the coloniser”. While most of the artworks were portraits of historical figures connected to UCT, at least one appeared to in fact be an anti-apartheid painting featuring a figure holding a sign reading “no to violence”.)
