On June 14, 2014, a Ukrainian Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane that attempted to land at the airport was shot down with Igla MANPADS. 40 paratroopers and 9 crew members on board perished.
Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine classified this incident as a terrorist attack.

Until late July 2014, the airport was surrounded by pro-Russian separatist forces and regularly targeted with artillery.
In the wake of recent advances in the ATO area, main Ukrainian forces were able to de-block the airport and come to the aid of the defenders.

Satellite imagery from August 31, 2014, show three artillery batteries aimed at the Luhansk Airport in the vicinity of the settlement of Krasne (48.369766, 39.518435).
They appear to be two batteries of 2A65 Msta-B 152mm howitzers and one 2S1 Gvozdika 122mm SPG battery.

On the same day, regular Russian forces and militants, supported by tanks and artillery, launched a major assault on the Luhansk International Airport.
Ukrainians were able to repel the attackers with the help of their own artillery, but the situation was dire for them.

On the night of September 1, 2014, Ukrainian forces received an order to withdraw from the ruins of the Luhansk International Airport.
The airport's defense lasted 146 days and claimed the lives of at least 29 Ukrainian servicemen on the ground + 49 from the downed Il-76.
