As an example, M777 and HIMARS make more sense for the USMC than heavier and more expensive alternatives. As is the case with most equipment, militaries need a mix because some systems will be more effective in certain environments than others.

84. While on the homemade kamikaze drones of Tactical Air Recce Group 'Birds of Madyar', in case you missed it, here is a closer view of their cottage industry making them. Who knows where this ingenuity will take them in 6 months' time: greater payloads and longer range I wager.

For the US, it is useful to have the US Army, which is designed to fight on terrain like Ukraine with tanks, mechanized infantry, and tracked howitzers, and to have the USMC which is designed to fight in more expeditionary environments. The equipment demands are different.

One general point is that this war has confirmed the relevance of many systems, but it hasn't necessarily proven other systems are no longer relevant because the conditions in other conflicts will be different. We need to be careful about extrapolating too much from this war.

@RALee85:
Self-propelled artillery have been critical in this war, but the terrain in Ukraine suits them better. M777 are lighter, can be transported by helicopter, and can be deployed in mountainous, jungle, and other environments where self-propelled howitzers would be less useful. https://t.co/K6nN9sTDSG
