They significantly threatened State Powers.Compare that to the UK, where the last credible threat to the power of the state dates to the English Civil War, which lasted from 1642 to 1651.

@abarisser I agree, yeah. As a European, what I mean is that I see more heterogeneous subcultures living side by side here in the US. In Europe there tends to be a bit more cultural homogeneity, generally speaking. Of course the rise of the welfare state has been changing things.

@matshenricson I lived in Norway for nearly a year. Loved it. Also one of my best summer vacations as a kid was in Finland, cabin on the lake near a strawberry farm. I would feel more attracted to Scandinavia if it had warmer winters and lower taxes. But I could still live there, for sure.
