#PhD fellowship in Biophysics

We invite applications for a PhD position in biophysics. The research aim is to use different computer simulations to understand how the shape of mitochondrial membranes emerges. The project is part of a research project entitled “Coupling Architectures of the Cellular Powerhouse to Energy Production States”, which is financed by Sapere Aude: DFF-Forskningsleder.

Start date is (expected to be) 1 March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Application deadline
The deadline for applications is 1 October 2023, 23:59 GMT +2.

Mark Newman | Leaders and Best: Networks and Ranking in Sports, Markets, and Society | Sep 5 2023

https://www.mivideo.it.umich.edu/media/t/1_ke40xxtk/293581272

One of the oldest of network problems is the ranking of individuals, teams, or commodities on the basis of pairwise comparisons between them. For example, if you know which football teams beat which others in a particular year, can you say which team is the best overall? This is a harder problem than it sounds because not all pairs of teams play games in a given season, and also because the outcomes of the games can be ambiguous or contradictory. This talk will introduce the techniques used to solve such ranking problems, with examples from games and sports, consumer research and marketing, and social hierarchies in both animal and human communities, then ask how those techniques can be extended to answer a range of new questions about competition and ranking, including the development of new computer algorithms for ranking, questions about the varying patterns of competition in different sports, and what happens when individuals or teams compete in multiple different ways.

#internship #Max_Planck_Institute Applications are invited from exceptional advanced undergraduate and Master students for internship positions at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPIPKS), Dresden, Germany.

Selected students will have the opportunity to interact with the members of the condensed matter division at the institute. Dates are flexible, duration is for a minimum of two months during spring/summer of 2024. MPIPKS will cover appropriate travel and subsistence costs.

During their stay, the students, under the guidance of a group member, will take part in research at the frontiers of condensed matter theory: strongly correlated systems (magnetism, superconductivity, quantum Hall effect, cold atoms, topological phases), quantum information and entanglement, systems out of equilibrium. (For more information see section on research areas at: https://www.pks.mpg.de/condensed-matter/research-areas/) They will also get a chance to participate in various academic activities at the Institute including seminars as well as in-house workshops and conferences.

We hope to receive all interns personally, but will consider offering virtual internships when travel is not possible.

A complete application should contain : (1) A single PDF file containing a cover letter and a Curriculum Vitae. The CV, or a separate transcript, should contain information regarding courses and university or entrance exams taken and performance in them, (2) One or two reference letters in support of the application (independently sent to the email address given below with subject-line “CM summer 2024-REF-name of the student ”).
Complete applications should be sent to burger@pks.mpg.de with the subject-line “CM summer 2024” by November 30, 2023.
