Do people choose the most efficient paths to navigate in a city? A recent study found that people try to point straight toward their destinations, even if this does not correspond to the most efficient route. https://t.co/9lLMjWiIBk

Directed Percolation in Random Temporal Network Models with Heterogeneities
https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.07698.

Here is an intro:

In this paper, we show that the limited waiting-time reachability, a general notion of connectivity, has a phase transition in the directed percolation universality class on many different types of temporal network models.

In a companion paper, we analytically showed that the limited waiting-time reachability on certain random temporal networks can show a phase transition in DP universality class: https://arxiv.org/abs/2107.01510

This was accomplished by a mean-field style derivation of the critical exponents close to the critical threshold. However, this relied on certain assumptions about the connectivity of the network that made it hard to generalise.

In this paper, we empirically confirm that limited waiting-time connectivity phase transition on a large variety of synthetic temporal networks with different levels of heterogeneity indeed belongs to the DP universality class. This is done by "unrolling" the connectivity in the temporal network into an event graph, a DAG representation of the temporal network, and estimating connectivity of all nodes simultaneously, equivalent to out-component size.

We verify the DP critical exponents by measuring certain characteristic quantities, e.g. density of occupied nodes as a function of time, at or close criticality at various system sizes and verifying how they scale with changing the system size.

We verified this for several combinations of (1) one to four-dimensional lattices, (2) ER and (3) random regular graphs with (1) Poisson, (2) self-renewal (power-law inter-event time) and (3) self-exciting (Hawkes) temporal process.

Summer School: Mathematics of Large Networks

The Mathematics of Large Networks Summer School is part of the Large networks and their limits (2022 Spring) semester. This summer school aims to bring together mathematicians and network scientists to foster the exchange of ideas between these two fields. During the school four minicourses will be given by distinguished researchers in graph theory and network science for students from both fields, who are interested in multidisciplinary approaches to networks. The main topics of the summer school include geometry of networks, dynamics on/of networks, higher order structures, network inference and applications.

BMS Dirichlet Postdoc Fellowship: The Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+ and the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) invite applications for the Dirichlet Postdoc Fellowship starting in Fall 2022. This two-year position is open to promising young mathematicians who will have completed their PhD degree by 30 September 2022 and want to pursue their own research in one of the eight broad research areas of mathematics covered by the Berlin Mathematical School. The competitive full-time salary includes health insurance. Fellows are expected to teach one semester course per year, typically in English at the graduate level. Applications from well-qualified individuals, especially women, are highly encouraged. https://math-berlin.de/bms-faculty/dirichlet-postdoctoral-program
