Complex systems in the spotlight: next steps after the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics

The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized the fundamental role of complex systems in the natural sciences. In order to celebrate this milestone, this editorial presents the point of view of the editorial board of JPhys Complexity on the achievements, challenges, and future prospects of the field. To distinguish the voice and the opinion of each editor, this editorial consists of a series of editor perspectives and reflections on few selected themes. A comprehensive and multi-faceted view of the field of complexity science emerges. We hope and trust that this open discussion will be of inspiration for future research on complex systems.

Thoughts on complex systems: an interview with Giorgio Parisi

The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded 'for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems', with half going to Giorgio Parisi 'for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales'. (The other half was jointly awarded to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann).

As part of this journal's wider celebration of the 2021 prize, JPhys Complexity Editor-in-Chief, Ginestra Bianconi, met with Nobel Laureate Giorgio Parisi to discuss his work on complex systems, his perspective on the wider field and advice for young researchers joining the community.

When Does the Brain Operate at Peak Performance?
The critical brain hypothesis suggests that neural networks do their best work when connections are not too weak or too strong.

Video: The phenomenon of criticality can explain the sudden emergence of new properties in a wide range of complex systems, from avalanches to flocks of birds to stock market crashes. Neuroscientists are now seeking evidence that criticality is at work in the brain’s networks of neurons.

"Reticula: A temporal network and hypergraph analysis software package"

https://qmul-ac-uk.zoom.us/j/85666603994

Abstract
In the last decade, temporal networks and static and temporal hypergraphs have enabled modelling connectivity and spreading processes in a wide array of real-world complex systems such as economic transactions, information spreading, brain activity and disease spreading. Here, we present the Reticula C++ library and Python package: A comprehensive suite of tools for working with real-world and synthetic static and temporal networks and hypergraphs. This includes various methods of creating synthetic networks and randomised null models based on real-world data, calculating reachability and simulating compartmental models on networks. The library is designed principally on an extensible, cache-friendly representation of networks, with an aim of easing multi-thread use in the high-performance computing environment.

In terms of challenges, I will talk more generally about the good and bad parts of writing and distributing software by scientists for scientists. What kind of skills would be useful? How can a PhD candidate reconcile scientific software development with the classic expectation of publishing papers and getting citations?
