OpenAI just officially released its Sora AI video generation model

Sora has its own interface, where users can:

— Organize and view their generated videos
— See other users’ prompts and featured content

Much like Midjourney’s web UI, this feed style will lead to some awesome inspiration and discoverability of effective prompts.

Sora can generate up to 20-sec videos, in several different aspect ratios.

Generation time was a previous concern with early Sora versions, and it appears OpenAI has gotten it down significantly.

Sora will be available today to Plus subscribers, with Pro users getting 10x usage and higher resolution.

The rollout looks to exclude the EU, UK, China at launch.

It scores an insane 90.5% w/ tree search on the WebVoyager benchmark which has tasks like:

SubCell a suite of vision transformer models for microscopy to capture single-cell biology

Microsoft Phi-4 is announced

Phi-4 is in Llama 3.3-70B category (win some lose some) with 5x fewer parameters, and notably outperforms on pure reasoning like GPQA (56%) and MATH (80%).

It's a 14B parameter LM trained heavily on synthetic data, with very strong performance, even exceeding GPT-4o on GPQA and MATH benchmarks!

Stablecoins will eat payments

Today the payment landscape is dominated by gatekeepers & extractive networks - stifling competition, limiting the creativity of builders & taxing the profitability of every business

All businesses want to add 2% to their bottom line.

Stablecoin adoption likely won't start with the big business.

Intl payments are painful for small businesses. Intermediaries take up to $150 in fees to send $1000 from Mexico to Vietnam. A 1.5% improvement to transaction costs is substantial (and a ways off), but it’s possible because stablecoins enable more competitive, efficient payments

There are no gatekeepers on the blockchain + stablecoins are composable, programmable & cheap. It's much easier to build a payment platform with stablecoins.

Anthropic released new research collaboration: “Best-of-N Jailbreaking”.

A simple, general-purpose method that jailbreaks (bypasses the safety features of) frontier AI models, and that works across text, vision, and audio.

In testing, it worked on Claude 3 Opus 92% of the time, and even worked on models with “circuit breaking” defenses.

Combined with many-shot jailbreaking on text inputs, Best-of-N achieves the same ASR 28x faster for Claude 3.5 Sonnet and 70x faster for Claude 3 Opus.

In a compelling presentation at NeurIPS 2024, Ilya Sutskever shared his vision of AI's past, present, and future, making a striking declaration about the end of pre-training as we know it.

The End of Pre-training

Sutskever made a powerful assertion: the current approach to AI pre-training is reaching its limits. Here's why:

While our capabilities are expanding through:
- Better hardware
- Improved algorithms
- Larger clusters


We face a fundamental constraint:
- "We have but one internet"
- Data has become "the fossil fuel of AI"
- We've reached "peak data"


What Comes Next?

Sutskever outlined several potential paths forward:
1. Agents - a direction many see as the future

3. Inference-time computation (referencing the O1 model)


A Fascinating Biological Parallel

Sutskever presented an intriguing graph showing the relationship between body and brain mass in mammals. Notably, hominids display a different scaling slope - evolution found a novel path for scaling intelligence. This suggests that AI might similarly discover new scaling paradigms.

The Future of AI Systems

According to Sutskever, next-generation AI systems will be fundamentally different:
- Truly agentic (current systems are "very, very slightly agentic")
- Capable of genuine reasoning
- Less predictable (increased reasoning leads to decreased predictability)
- Better at learning from limited data
- Self-aware (because it's useful)


On Reasoning and Unpredictability

Sutskever drew an interesting parallel with chess AI: the most advanced chess programs are unpredictable even to grandmasters. This illustrates how increased reasoning capability naturally leads to less predictable behavior.

Sutskever believes future AI systems will be qualitatively different from current models. While they will possess extraordinary capabilities, their behavior will be fundamentally different from today's systems. The key challenge will be managing systems that are both more capable and less predictable than current models.

Self-Correction and Understanding

A particularly interesting point was about future models' ability to self-correct. Sutskever suggests that future systems will be able to recognize and correct their own errors, with some current models already showing early signs of this capability.

While acknowledging the unpredictability of AI's future development, Sutskever is confident we're moving toward systems with radically different qualities and properties. His perspective, as one of the field's leading researchers, offers valuable insights into both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
