The Bank of Canada has published a paper which furthers research on privacy in payments, by proposing a credential scheme that is also resistant to quantum computing attacks

Highlights

1.Digital payments and decentralized systems enable the creation of new financial products and services for users.

2. One core challenge in digital payments is the need to protect users from fraud and abuse while retaining privacy in individual transactions.

The Bank of Canada:

*proposes a pseudonymous credential scheme for use in payment systems to tackle this problem. The scheme is privacy-preserving, efficient for practical applications, and hardened against quantum computing attacks.

* presents a constant-round, interactive, zero-knowledge proof of knowledge (ZKPOK) that relies on a one-way function and an asymmetric encryption primitive—both of which need to support at most one homomorphic addition. The scheme is implemented with SWIFFT as a post-quantum one-way function and ring learning with errors as a post-quantum asymmetric encryption primitive, with the protocol deriving its quantum- hardness from the properties of the underlying primitives.

*evaluated the performance of the ZKPOK instantiated with the chosen primitive and found that a memory footprint of 85 KB is needed to achieve 200 bits of security. Comparison reveals that our scheme is more efficient than equivalent, state-of-the-art post-quantum schemes.

A practical and interactive credential mechanism was constructed from the proposed building blocks, in which users are issued pseudonymous credentials against their personally identifiable information that can be used to register with financial service providers without revealing personal information.

The protocol is shown to be secure and free of information leakage, preserving the user’s privacy regardless of the number of registrations.

⚡️Research on predicting early Parkinson'sz. Using smartwatch data, researchers were able to identify people up to seven years before their clinical diagnosis.

Using data from UK biobank, researchers retrospectively analysed the time preceding the diagnosis.

They found that people, who years after data collection got a diagnosis, already showed slowing of movement and reduced sleep quality. No other investigated disorder showed such a reduction.

Researchers trained models to identify these people from the general population.

They compared their performance to models based on genetics, blood biochemistry, lifestyle, or known prodromal symptoms, like constipation or loss of smell. Models using smartwatch data outperformed all others.

These findings highlight the potential of performing large-scale screening for Parkinson's in the general population using smart watch data. Further, identification in the early stages, could be transformative for research into neuroprotective treatments.

Full body scans are quite certainly not the future of preventive medicine and there is a good reason why the medical community would agree

The future is not about measuring and analyzing every single thing in the human body and then try to find the needle in the data haystack, but to discover signs that could help either catch diseases early or prevent them from happening.
The Monetary Authority of Singapore announced new regulatory requirements for Digital Payment Token Service Providers (DPTSPs), covering the segregation and custody of customer assets and the facilitation of lending and staking services.

Here’s what it means for DPTSPs:

1. Customers’ DPTs must be segregated and held on trust in a separate set of wallet addresses, while customer fiat must be held with financial institutions in Singapore. DPTSPs must conduct daily reconciliation of customers’ assets.

2. At least 90% of customer DPTs must be stored in cold wallets, lower than the 98% requirement in Hong Kong. The movement of customer assets should be controlled by senior management and personnel in Singapore, though private keys themselves need not be stored onshore.

3. MAS has opted not to mandate the use of an independent custodian for now, given the limited number of such players in the market. Instead, DPTSPs must maintain a custody function that is operationally independent from other business units.

4. DPTSPs are not permitted to facilitate the lending and staking of retail customers’ assets. They can still do so for accredited and institutional investors, subject to risk disclosure and customer consent.

5. These requirements were first discussed in MAS’ October 2022 consultation paper on DPTSP regulation, and will be formalized through guidelines and amendments to the Payment Services Regulations, with a target implementation timeline of October 2023.

6. Looking ahead, DPTSPs can also expect further requirements on consumer access, such as suitability requirements, which were considered in MAS’ October 2022 consultation paper, but not covered in this week’s announcements.
Eric Schmidt: this is how AI will transform the way science gets done

Science is about to become much more exciting—and that will affect us all, argues Google's former CEO.

With the advent of AI, science is about to become much more exciting—and in some ways unrecognizable.

The reverberations of this shift will be felt far outside the lab; they will affect us all.

Reimagining science

At its core, the scientific process we all learned in elementary school will remain the same: conduct background research, identify a hypothesis, test it through experimentation, analyze the collected data, and reach a conclusion. But AI has the potential to revolutionize how each of these components looks in the future.

Eventually, much of science will be conducted at “self-driving labs”—automated robotic platforms combined with artificial intelligence. Here, we can bring AI prowess from the digital realm into the physical world. Such self-driving labs are already emerging at companies like Emerald Cloud Lab and Artificial and even at Argonne National Laboratory.

Finally, at the stage of analysis and conclusion, self-driving labs will move beyond automation and, informed by experimental results they produced, use LLMs to interpret the results and recommend the next experiment to run.

Then, as partners in the research process, the AI lab assistant could order supplies to replace those used in earlier experiments and set up and run the next recommended experiments overnight, with results ready to deliver in the morning—all while the experimenter is home sleeping.
Inflection AI Develops Supercomputer Equipped With 22,000 NVIDIA H100 AI GPUs

Inflection announced that it is building one of the world's largest AI-based supercomputers, and it looks like we finally have a glimpse of what it would be.

It is reported that the Inflection supercomputer is equipped with 22,000 H100 GPUs, and based on analysis, it would contain almost 700 four-node racks of Intel Xeon CPUs.

The supercomputer will utilize an astounding 31 Mega-Watts of power.

The surprising fact about the supercomputer is the acquisition of 22,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs.

We all are well aware that, in recent times, it has been challenging to acquire even a single unit of the H100s since they are in immense demand, and NVIDIA cannot cope with the influx of orders. In the case of Inflection AI, NVIDIA is considering being an investor in the company, which is why in their case, it is easier to get their hands on such a massive number of GPUs.

According to TechCrunch, Inflection AI has raised around $1.5 billion in investments, and currently, the company is valued at $4 billion. Through this supercomputer, the AI model "Inflection 1" is expected to improve significantly, especially in coding tasks, since the company lacks behind in

Tesla may tap TSMC to produce its full self-driving chip on 5nm process, media report, noting speculation for such a cooperation surfaced after a Tesla executive spoke at TSMC’s N. America tech symposium.

Tesla's prior FSD chip was manufactured by Samsung on 14nm, and the new one was expected to be made on Samsung 7nm.

The speculation comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk told a crowd in Shanghai on Wednesday that Tesla is “very close to achieving full self-driving without human supervision.”
Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology, using the Blackrock Neurotech Cerebus Acquisition System, have pioneered a robust, data-driven method that classifies ongoing neural activity - the cortical states - in *real-time*.

The standout feature of this already impressive feat?

It's all unsupervised. This approach not only minimizes assumptions but also lets the data speak for itself, contributing to a broader understanding of brain processes.

By letting the data speak for itself, this research minimizes assumptions and holds the potential for far-reaching applications.

Meta commits to dedicate three engineer-years to implement the removal of the GIL from Python and fix upcoming compatibility and performance issues with it.

All this dependent on whether the Steering Council accepts PEP 703.

This is way more impactful than it sounds.

Python executes on a single thread regardless of how many CPU cores you have. Removing the notorious GIL (Global Interpreter Lock) means that Python can finally run true concurrency.
