A comission of inquiry has been set up to determine the cause of the accident.

🇨🇩 Early voter registration in DRC marred by kit shortages

Voter registration kicked off in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) over the weekend, as the country prepares for the December 2023 general election.

President Felix Tshisekedi is expected to seek re-election after a first term marked by economic hardship and a resurge of rebel activity in the east.

Almost 50 million people across the central African nation's 26 provinces are expected to register to vote over the next three months. However, registration opened in the first 10 provinces on Saturday morning to long lines and undersupplied stations.

Boko Haram jihadists attacked herders guarding their cattle in a pasture near Airamne village in Mafa district on Saturday, a local militia group said.

“Seventeen herders were killed in the fight and all their cattle taken away,” militia leader said.

A minibus has hit a landmine in Burkina Faso in West Africa, killing at least 10 people, officials say.

Five others were wounded in the blast, which occurred in the east of the country near the border with Niger.

🇰🇪 Al-Shabab militants kill two men near Kenya’s east coast

Al-Shabab Islamist militants attacked Taa village in the Pandaguo area of Lamu county on Christmas Day - a Christian religious holiday - and killed two local men.

The area neighbours Boni forest, where security agencies have been conducting an operation since 2015 to flush out militants in hiding.

The forest near the Kenya-Somalia border and the area around it have been repeatedly attacked by the militant group in recent years.

South African authorities have updated to 18 the number of victims that resulted from Saturday's gas tanker explosion near Johannesburg.

Initially, the authorities had announced 10 deaths, updated to 15 on Sunday.

Of the 18 victims announced on Monday, half were staff working at Tambo Memorial Hospital which suffered extensive damages due to the explosion.

🇨🇩 DR Congo sentences soldiers to death for killing two Chinese nationals

Eight Congolese soldiers and a civilian were sentenced to death, on appeal, by a military court in Ituri province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Two of the eight were high-ranking colonels.

The prosecution successfully argued that the two colonels had organised and planned an attack on a convoy carrying Chinese workers in Irumu territory, Ituri, with the aim of stealing four gold bars and 5,600 euros carried by the victims.

The price of gold in Egypt has risen to unprecedented highs as nervous savers seek refuge from a weakening currency and some companies export bullion to raise scarce dollars to fund imports, industry experts say.

Figures from the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce's (FEDCOC) gold division show the price of 21-carat gold surpassing 1,800 Egyptian pounds ($72.73) per gramme in December, what local media reports say is an all-time high.
