The Congolese army described the withdrawal of M23 rebels from a strategic town near the regional capital, Goma, as a "decoy".

According to the army, the rebels were strengthening their positions in other areas.

In recent months the M23 rebels have conquered vast areas in eastern Congo advancing within a few dozen kilometres of Goma.

Fourteen Iranian fishermen have returned home after years in captivity by al-Shabab militants in Somalia.

They were freed after "lengthy negotiations with government officials, tribal chiefs and Somali elders," Iranian news agency ISNA reports.

They were flown back to Iran late on Saturday before being taken to their hometown of Chabahar, in the south.

Ethnic violence in Sudan’s troubled western region of Darfur killed at least 12 people over the past few days, an aid group said on Sunday.

The clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the Beleil area in South Darfur province also wounded at least 42 people, said Adam Regal, spokesman for the General Coordination for Refugees and Displaced in Darfur.

Local authorities declared a state of emergency and imposed a night-time curfew to help stop the clashes.

A Prison warden was lynched on Christmas day following a robbery incident in Nairobi.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the warden who was attached to Nairobi West died after a hail of blows from angry members of the public.

The warden who was in the company of two other robbers was armed with a loaded Ceska pistol when they accosted a woman along Muchai Drive in Kilimani and robbed her of a mobile phone and other valuables.

Voter registration kicked off in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) over the weekend, as the country prepares for the December 2023 general election.

President Felix Tshisekedi is expected to seek re-election after a first term marked by economic hardship and a resurge of rebel activity in the east.

Almost 50 million people across the central African nation's 26 provinces are expected to register to vote over the next three months. However, registration opened in the first 10 provinces on Saturday morning to long lines and undersupplied stations.
