๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ โ€œI am seeking for nothing except to leave a country in peaceโ€ Sall says as protests erupt

In his first interview since announcing the postponement of the presidential election, Senegal's Macky Sall argues his decision to intervene was necessary to prevent worse electoral chaos.

He spoke on Friday as nationwide protests shook the country.

โ€œI am for an inclusive, transparent and peaceful process that allows me to pass on the baton smoothly and in peace. That is the most important thing for our country today. You are right that West Africa is currently in a extremely difficult time, it's not at such a time when I am about to end my term that I will reinvent myself in a new career as a dictator or non-democrat," Sall told.

"Thatโ€™s a picture they are painting, but it doesnโ€™t correspond to my profile or my personality and that doesnโ€™t correspond to reality."

Senegal's president now believes a new dialogue can solve the crisis the country grapples with.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช One dead and two wounded in Nairobi hyena attack

Marauding hyenas killed a man and wounded two people near a university outside the Kenyan capital, officials said.

Anthony Pasha was dismembered and killed by hyenas while he was collecting firewood at a forest close to his home, according to family members.

With incidents involving hyenas increasingly frequent in the area which borders the Nairobi National Park, residents are angry.

"The government should help us. Everything has been killed in this homestead. Cows were killed, goats, and now its people. We havenโ€™t found any part of the deceased,โ€ said Pasha's relatives.

One of the wounded was a student at Kenyaโ€™s Multimedia University who was attacked by the hyenas late Monday on a road that borders the Nairobi National Park.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Niger restates ban on flights from Nigeria

The military government in Niger has reiterated its ban on flights from Nigeria, insisting that flights emanating from Nigeria would not be allowed to land in Niger.

It, however, stated that the restriction does not affect commercial flights that fly over Nigerien airspace without landing there.

Niger authorities stated that the countryโ€™s airspace โ€œis opened to all national and international commercial flights from ground to unlimited except for Nigerian flight to or from Nigeria.โ€

Nigeria had earlier issued a statement reinstating its earlier ban on flights to and from Niger, stating that the action was taken as part of the ECOWAS resolution.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ Clashes spread in Senegal over election postponement

Violent protests in Senegal against the postponement of presidential elections have spread across the country.

In the capital Dakar, security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Current opposition leader Khalifa Sall, who is not related to the president, earlier called the election delay a "constitutional coup".

Opposition called from state-wide protests. However, Khalifa Sall denounced the violence between protesters and police. "The hearts of all democrats bleed at this outburst of clashes provoked by the unjustified halting of the electoral process," he said.

Earlier president Sall said he was ready to step down, but wanted to leave the country stable and peaceful.

Macky Sall has said he is not planning to run for office again - but his critics accuse him of either trying to cling on to power or unfairly influencing whoever succeeds him.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด At least five dead after soldier opens fire at military base in Mogadishu

At least five people, including Somali military officials and a United Arab Emirates soldier, were killed on Saturday after a soldier opened fire at a military base in the capital Mogadishu, an army officer and hospital staff told.

The UAE's defence ministry said three members of its armed forces and one Bahraini officer were killed in a "terrorist act" in Somalia while they were training Somali armed forces.

Two more were injured, the ministry added.

The ministry did not give other details about the attack but said the UAE "continues to coordinate and cooperate with the Somali government in investigating" the act.

The gunman, a newly trained Somali soldier, was also shot dead at the Gordon military base. "The soldier opened fire on the UAE trainers and Somali military officials when they started praying," said the military officer.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Tuareg separatists lift road blockades in northern Mali

Tuareg separatists announced the lifting of blockades they'd set up in December on main roads throughout northern Mali after the national army took back several towns.

"All blockades on the routes from the Algerian border to the towns of Timbuktu and Gao have been lifted," the Permanent Strategic Framework, an alliance of rebel forces, told.

The Taureg-dominated rebel groups lost control of several localities in the north of the country after an army offensive in late 2023 that culminated with the taking of Kidal.

In December, the rebels blocked all products and types of vehicles in the sparsely populated north.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ณ Cholera outbreaks in African countries worsened by floods said the UN

Africa is witnessing a surge in cholera infections, notably in its east and south, and floods caused by the heavy rainfall are making the situation worse, particularly in the DR Congo, according to the United Nations.

More than 26,000 cases of cholera and 700 deaths were reported in 10 African countries in January, nearly double the number reported last year over the same period, the WHO said.

Zambia and Zimbabwe have been worst hit, but Mozambique, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia and Nigeria are also in the grip of "active outbreaks," with a high risk of further spread.

"Floods, cyclones, and droughts further reduce access to clean water and create an ideal environment for cholera to thrive," said WHO spokesperson.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Sabotage ruled out as South Africa's power cuts worsen

South Africa's Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has ruled out claims that sabotage is behind the country's worsening power cuts.

Beginning last Wednesday, South Africa has been experiencing its most extreme power outages since November.

The secretary general of the ruling ANC party Fikile Mbalula on Saturday alleged that the intensified power cuts were "clear sabotage" and called for "strong extra security measures".

Ramokgopa rejected the claims on Sunday, saying that the extreme power outages had been caused by leaking boiler tubes, which are used in the generation of electricity in power plants.

The electricity minister said that the leakages had caused the simultaneous failure of nine major power units.

Two of the power units have returned to operations, resulting in the downgrading of power cuts by one level.
