๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ณ Dozens injured as explosion hits Guinea's capital

Several people are feared killed and others injured following a blast at an oil terminal in Guinea's capital Conakry early on Monday, a senior police officer said.

Privately-owned Le Courrier de Conakry news website reports that at least four people have died and about 100 others have been injured in the incident.

The blast rocked the Kaloum district in downtown Conakry, blowing out the windows of several nearby homes, forcing hundreds to flee the area.

A huge fire and billowing black smoke can be seen from miles away as firefighters rushed to the area, while several tanker trucks hastily left the depot, escorted by soldiers and police.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ Kenya rejects demand to arrest Congolese politicians

Kenyan President William Ruto says he rejected a demand to arrest DR Congo's politicians who launched an alliance with rebels in Nairobi on Friday.

Corneille Nangaa, the former head of DR Congo's electoral body, on Friday announced in a hotel in the Kenyan capital that he was creating a political-military alliance with M23 rebels and other armed groups.

The move sparked an angry response from the Congolese government who warned Kenya of โ€œconsequencesโ€ for hosting him.

President Ruto said he refused to heed the request to arrest the DR Congo politicians, terming it "undemocratic."

"Kenya is a democracy. We cannot arrest anybody who has issued a statement. We do not arrest people for making statements, we arrest criminals," Ruto added.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ SA leader accused of meddling in Zulu succession battle

A faction of South Africa's Zulu royal family has accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of meddling in the family's affairs and fuelling divisions, days after the president said he would appeal against a court decision invalidating his coronation of Zulu King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini.

Prince Thokozani Zulu, a supporter of the king's half-brother Prince Simakade Zulu, told that President Ramaphosa's conduct had "foiled any possible attempt to engage" with the new king.

He also accused Ramaphosa of taking sides in the family succession feud.

Prince Simakade and King Misuzulu, who was officially crowned king by President Ramaphosa last year, have been battling for the throne since the 2021 death of their father King Goodwill Zwelithini.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Kenya and EU sign new trade deal

Kenya and the European Union have signed a major economic partnership agreement (EPA) that will guarantee the East African country duty-free and unlimited access for select products into the EU, its biggest export market.

Kenyan President William Ruto and EU Commission chief Ursula Von Der Leyen were at a signing ceremony in Nairobi.

Kenya is required to reciprocate by gradually opening its market to EU products.

The EU is Kenya's leading export destination and second-largest trading partner, totalling about โ‚ฌ3.3 of trade in 2022 - an increase of 27% compared to 2018.

Both the EU and Kenyan parliaments will have to ratify the deal to bring it into effect.

The EPA was initially meant for East African Community members but all countries in the regional bloc, barring Kenya, abandoned the trade pact in 2014.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ณ Schools closed in Guinea after oil depot blast hits capital

Guinea's military authorities have ordered the closure of all schools in the capital following an explosion at an oil terminal.

The blast at the main hydrocarbon depot of the Guinea Oil Company in the Kaloum neighbourhood of Conakry caused a huge fire, forcing residents to flee the area.

The junta has ordered all private and public schools in the area to be shut and urged workers to stay home.

It also said all petrol stations except for emergency services should be closed in the area.

The cause of the fire is unknown, authorities said, and its "scale and consequences could have a direct impact on the population".

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Uganda court hears challenge to anti-gay law

Ugandaโ€™s Constitutional Court is hearing a case challenging the anti-homosexuality law that came into effect in May.

It imposes severe punishments on those convicted of same sex acts including the death penalty for some crimes.

The law is being challenged by a group of both individuals and human rights organisations who argue it violates constitutional rights and freedoms.

They want the law - which has triggered Western sanctions against Uganda - to be declared unconstitutional and annulled.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ซ Slight reshuffle in the transitional government of Burkina Faso

The president of the transition of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traorรฉ, carried out a partial reshuffle of his government, notably concerning the head of diplomacy, according to a presidential decree.

Under this decree, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Olivia Rouamba, in office since March 2022, gives way to Karamoko Jean-Marie Traorรฉ who was until now in charge of the Regional cooperation.

Traore also named Yacouba Zabre Gouba a new mining and energy minister, replacing Jean-Pierre Boussim. In July, Parliament adopted a modification of the mining code allowing the government to use part of mining taxes to support security and development efforts.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has said he has โ€œnotedโ€ his predecessorโ€™s statement about voting for a new party rather than the African National Congress (ANC).

On Saturday, Jacob Zuma said he would campaign for the newly registered Umkhonto We Sizwe party.

He also launched highly personal attacks on President Ramaphosa, including calling him a โ€œproxyโ€ for white capitalist interests.

Asked what the ANC would do about the announcement, President Ramaphosa said: โ€œWhat I can say to you is that we all listened to that announcement and we have noted what he has said, what he has announced, and that is as far as we are prepared to go at this point in time. And everyone in our country is free to express themselves in relation to who they will vote for and why they will vote for them".

Residents of the Sudanese city of Wad Madani say the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have attacked a hospital and have taken over an army base.

The area is home to hundreds of thousands of civilians who have fled the violence further north in the capital, Khartoum.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, the US State Department called on the RSF to cease its advance on Wad Madani.

Washington said the group's actions were inconsistent with its stated aim of protecting Sudanese civilians.

There are also reports of renewed fighting in the city of Nyala in Sudan's western Darfur region.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ณ Demonstrators commemorate Hamas executive's killing in Tunisia in 2016

Nearly a thousand protesters, many shouting Free Palestine, marked the seventh anniversary of the assassination of Hamas executive and aircraft engineer Mohamed Zouari in Sfax, central-eastern Tunisia.

Zouari was shot dead in the city on December 15, 2016. At the time, Tunisian authorities blamed foreign agents for the engenieer's murder.

On Saturday, the march coordinator highlighted the context of this year's commemoration. "Every year we commemorate the anniversary of the assassination of the martyr Mohamed Zouari, but on a limited scale. This year's commemoration is special because it coincides with the flooding of al-Aqsa (Hamas attack on 7 October)," Mourad Ayedi said.
