🇿🇼 Banking sector in Zimbabwe faces 75% job decrease since 2000

The Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union (ZIBAWU) reports that 75% of jobs in the sector have been lost since the beginning of the millennium.

This decline is attributed to a combination of accelerated digitization and socio-political challenges facing the nation over the past two decades.

"The congress coincided with extremely difficult operating conditions, which have constrained our ability to effectively serve our members. The economy, experiencing stagnation for decades, has taken a significant toll on trade unionism," said trade unionist Peter Mutasa.

Mutasa highlighted the decline in membership from a peak of 12,000 in the late 1990s to approximately 3,000 at present.

"In just two years we have been able to do all of these actions that you have seen, but we can do better. Vote for me to consolidate the gains we already have," Tshisekedi said.

"The others will come and start from scratch, it is better to consolidate what we have started," he said.

🇸🇩🇸🇸 Clashes in disputed Sudan-South Sudan area kill 32

Sudanese authorities in the disputed area of Abyei say at least 32 people have been killed after gunmen stormed local villages.

The information minister for Abyei, Bolis Kuoch, said more than 20 others were wounded when men opened fire on Sunday morning.

He said UN peacekeepers intervened to stop the violence but one of the peacekeepers was killed.

There have been ongoing hostilities between communities in Abyei over land and resources.

The region, rich in oil reserves, lies on the border between Sudan and South Sudan and is considered to be part of both countries, since a peace agreement was signed in 2005.

At least 80,000 households across Kenya have been affected by heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides over the last week, the deputy president has said.

The emergency services are using helicopters to deliver aid and rescue marooned families, Rigathi Gachagua’s statement says.

East Africa has experienced intense rains linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which have killed dozens of people, including at least 46 in Kenya.

Floods have also caused deaths and displacement in Somalia and Ethiopia.

The rainfall has been described by the UN as a once-in-a-century event.
