🇲🇱 In Bamako, Malians celebrate capture of rebel stronghold by army and Wagner PMC

Mali's army and Wagner group has recaptured the strategic northern town of Kidal, a stronghold of Tuareg-dominated separatist groups.

The capture of Kidal is a significant symbolic success for Mali's military leaders.

The news was greeted by celebrations in the capital Bamako. Dozens of people gathered on Independence Square.

The government of Burkina Faso also welcomed the news, calling it a "pivotal" moment in the fight against armed groups in the Sahel region.

The rebels also admitted they had lost their stronghold town but vowed to keep fighting.

Fun fact is that Azawad media said that citizens of Kidal are afraid of Mali and Wagner and are leaving the city. But images and videos on social media shows that people of Kidal are very happy with army and Wagner fighters.

🇺🇬🇰🇪 Uganda MPs approve ending oil imports through Kenya

Uganda's parliament passed a bill allowing the state-owned oil company Uganda National Oil Company (Unoc) to source and supply oil to the domestic market.

If approved by President Yoweri Museveni, the bill will end the country’s decades-long practice of relying on Kenyan companies for oil imports.

MPs who supported the bill said it would reduce fuel costs by cutting out middlemen and “fuel cartels that arbitrarily influence fuel pricing”.

Uganda’s Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa recently said that the country needed to stop importing oil through Kenyan companies as it “exposed Uganda to occasional supply vulnerabilities where Ugandan oil marketing companies were considered secondary whenever there were supply disruptions”.

🇬🇧🇷🇼 UK's Sunak to learn fate of Rwandan migrant deportation plan British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will learn on Wednesday whether his government can finally go ahead with its plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda when the UK Supreme Court gives its verdict…
🇬🇧🇷🇼 UK's Rwanda migrant resettlement plan ruled unlawful

The Supreme Court ruled that the British government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda was unlawful as it could not be considered a safe third country.

"This was not the outcome we wanted, but we have spent the last few months planning for all eventualities and we remain completely committed to stopping the boats," said British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. "Illegal migration destroys lives and costs British taxpayers millions of pounds a year. We need to end it and we will do whatever it takes to do so."

"This is ultimately a decision for the UK’s judicial system. However, we take issue with the ruling that Rwanda is not a safe third country for asylum seekers and refugees in terms of refoulement," said Yolande Makolo, a spokeswoman for the Rwandan government.

🇬🇭 Ghana's President Akufo-Addo calls for united front on slavery reparations

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged African and Caribbean leaders to unite in demanding reparations for historical injustices committed during slavery and colonialism, terming the action “a valid demand for justice”.

He said that Africa was owed reparations by countries that participated in slavery as the practice had stifled Africa’s progress.

"No amount of money can restore the damage caused by the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences. But surely, this is a matter that the world must confront and can no longer ignore," Akufo-Addo said on Tuesday at an ongoing reparations conference in Ghana and attended by leaders from African and Caribbean nations.

The conference seeks to build a united front and formulate a plan to guide African countries and the diaspora in pursuing reparations.

🇲🇬 Curfew was imposed in Madagascar's capital ahead of poll

An overnight curfew has been imposed in Madagascar's capital, Antananarivo, ahead of Thursday's presidential election which most opposition candidates have described as a fraud and are boycotting.

The country has been extremely tense with numerous opposition protests being dispersed by the police.

Antananarivo's police chief said the curfew was necessary after what he called acts of sabotage including the burning of a polling station.

President Andry Rajoelina is running for re-election, but 10 of the 12 opposition candidates have urged supporters not to vote, raising concerns about the credibility of the poll.

He said the army's victory represents a turning point in the commitment of the Malian authorities to “liberate the entire country”.

🇺🇬🇬🇧🇺🇸 Uganda's President Museveni criticises US, UK for security advisories

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni denounced the United States and UK for issuing adverse security advisories to their citizens in Uganda, and accused both countries of creating and conserving insecurity in Africa.

The U.S. and UK both issued travel warnings urging their citizens not to travel to Jinja town in eastern Uganda to attend a cultural festival that was held over the weekend, with the UK citing the killing of tourists and the risk of threats against foreigners.

Museveni said the British and the Americans were panicking and making a mistake in issuing unwarranted advisories.

"These advisories by some of these actors is another form of interference in our internal affairs by these elements. Moreover, part of the terrorism in Africa is either created or conserved by some of the actors that try to be global policemen," Museveni said.

🇸🇸 South Sudan deploys first unified forces after peace deal

Hundreds of former rebels and government troops in South Sudan's unified forces were deployed at a ceremony, marking progress for the country's peace process.

The unification of forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and his rival, Vice President Riek Machar, was a key condition of the 2018 peace deal that ended a five-year conflict in which nearly 400,000 people died.

Tens of thousands of former fighters were integrated into the country's army in August last year but none have been deployed until now.

The first battalion comprising nearly 1,000 soldiers will be deployed to Malakal in northern Upper Nile State, which has received huge numbers of South Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict in neighbouring Sudan.

At the ceremony the country's chief of defence forces, urged the battalion to remain united, saying: "Be a soldier and don't get involved in politics.
