๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช At least 8 dead in military helicopter crash in Kenya

The crash of a military helicopter in Kenya, near the border with Somalia, killed at least eight people, officials said.

The cause of the accident in Lamu County, on the Kenyan coast, was not immediately clear. Kenyan defense forces operate in the region to help deter al-Qaeda-linked extremists from the Al-Shahaab group, based across the border in Somalia.

The Defense Ministry said the Air Force helicopter crashed during a night patrol. It was not indicated how many people were onboard the helicopter when it crashed. Troops were already dispatched to recover bodies.

Al-Shabaab has increased attacks in Kenya in recent months, killing dozens of people in the border region.

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ผ Rwanda president said he will run for fourth term in 2024

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame has said he will run for a fourth term in next year's presidential election.

โ€œYes, I am indeed a candidate,โ€ Kagame told. Back in April he said he was looking forward to retiring and handing over power after 23 years in office.

Asked about what the West would think about his decision to run again, Kagame said: "I'm sorry for the West, but what the West thinks is not my problem. I am happy with the confidence that the Rwandans have in me. I will always serve them, as much when I can."

He won the last election in 2017 with 98.8% of the vote.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Nigeria's presidential election result challenged at Supreme Court

Nigeria's two main opposition leaders on Tuesday filed separate appeals at the Supreme Court challenging a tribunal ruling that earlier this month upheld President Bola Tinubu's victory in a disputed February election.

Atiku Abubakar, from the People's Democratic Party who came second in the election, said in a court filing that the tribunal erred in law "when it failed to nullify the presidential election on the ground of non compliance" with the electoral law.

Labour Party's Peter Obi, who polled third in the presidential race, also filed his appeal, a spokesperson for his campaign told.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ Opposition party in Senegal Pastef appeals to the Court of Justice of ECOWAS and the Supreme Court

Ousmane Sonko's lawyers have filed two appeals with two courts. They are asking the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to order the Senegalese government to suspend the dissolution of the Pastef party and to restore the party's political rights in view of the presidential election scheduled for 25 February 2024.

The first appeal was lodged with the ECOWAS Court of Justice, the second with the Senegalese Supreme Court. In both cases, the lawyers are seeking the annulment or at least the suspension of the decision to dissolve Ousmane Sonko's political group.

The hope is that the Court of Justice of ECOWAS will rule in favour of Pastef and declare its dissolution illegal, which would oblige Senegal to reverse its decision.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ DR Congo still has difficulty securing investments in Inga power project said the president

Democratic Republic of Congo still has difficulty securing investments for its Inga power project, the president said on Tuesday in New York, adding that the World Bank and China are interested.

The multibillion dollar project, which will harness the power of the Congo River, has been repeatedly delayed by red tape and disagreements between Congo and its partners.

"Unfortunately, we are still facing difficulties in mobilizing investments," President Felix Tshisekedi told.

Tshisekedi has previously said he had held discussions with potential new partners, including China and the World Bank.

Tshisekedi also said that while there is nothing solid, there is lots of interest including from South Africa, which hopes the project will help solve its crippling power crisis.
