๐ง๐ซ Gunshots in Ouagadougou were "warning shots"
The shots heard in the early hours of Tuesday in the centre of Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou, were "warning shots" provoked by the presence of an individual within the "security perimeter" of an airbase, a government told.
"These were warning shots after an individual found himself in the security perimeter of the airbase area." Heavy gunfire began to be heard around 12:45 a.m. in the heart of the Burkinabรจ capital, before ceasing about 40 minutes later.
"The security authority will decide on the situation and the motivations for such recklessness," added the government. "It's an unfortunate incident limited to the air base."

๐น๐ณ Tunisian president names Ahmed Hachani as prime minister, replacing Bouden
Tunisian President Kais Saied appointed Ahmed Hachani as new prime minister, replacing Najla Bouden, who ended her duties, the Tunisian presidency said early on Wednesday.
In recent weeks, the president has repeatedly blamed officials and government, saying they must act to address problems and poor public services, including frequent water and electricity cuts.
"There are great challenges that we must raise to preserve our homeland, our state and civil peace," Saied told Hachani after he took the constitutional oath.
Bouden's government failed to fix the economic and social crisis. While Bouden's government supported an economic reform program to obtain a $1.9 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, Saeid rejected any reforms that would include cutting subsidies on food and energy, saying doing so could cause acute social tensions.

๐ช๐ท Magnitude-5.6 earthquake occurs east-southeast of Asmara in Eritrea
A magnitude-5.6 earthquake occurred in Eritrea on August 1st. The epicenter was about 65 km east-southeast of capital city of Asmara. The epicenter was at the town of Irafalle, according to the Eritrean Ministry of Mines and Energy.
The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km, and light-to-moderate shaking was felt throughout much of Eritrea and parts of far northern Ethiopia. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, but the government most likely will temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage.

๐๐ณ๐ฌ๐ณ๐ช Nigeria cuts power to Niger
There are rolling blackouts in Nigerโs capital, Niamey, as well as the other major cities of Maradi and Zinder.
People have power supplies for about an hour at a time and then the power goes off for four or five hours.
The Niger electricity company, Nigelec, says this is a result of Nigeria cutting supplies as part of sanctions imposed by the West African bloc, Ecowas, over the coup.
Nigeria is the major supplier of electricity to Niger.

โก๏ธ๐ช๐น Ethiopian military clashes with militia in Amhara
Ethiopia's military has clashed with fighters from a militia in the Amhara region, residents said on Wednesday.
Fano, a part-time militia with no formal command structure, backed federal troops in a two-year civil war in the neighbouring Tigray region that ended last November. But the relationship has soured over what some in the region say is a disregard by the national government for Amhara's security.
Fano fighters and Ethiopian National Defense Force troops clashed near Debre Tabor on Tuesday and Wednesday, a doctor at a hospital in the town and a police officer told.
The doctor said the hospital had received three people with serious injuries and 10 with minor injuries, including wounds from gunshots and heavy weapons.

โก๏ธ๐ณ๐ช West African bloc sends mission to Niger to negotiate with coup leaders
West African regional bloc ECOWAS sent a delegation to Niger on Wednesday to negotiate with the military officers who seized power in last week's coup, while regional defence chiefs met in neighbouring Nigeria.
"The military option is the very last option on the table, the last resort, but we have to prepare for the eventuality," said Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner. "There is a need to demonstrate that we cannot only bark but can bite," he told.
The delegation to Niger is being led by former Nigerian military leader Abdulsalami Abubakar, who arrived on Wednesday to start talks with the junta, Musah said.
As it seems, the situation with Mali repeats itself, when ECOWAS threatened Mali's military government, but didn't do anything in the end, except for sanctions that also haven't done any severe damage.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to be a virtual participant at a summit of BRICS nations in South Africa later this month rather than attend in person.
The foreign ministry declined to comment, while the prime minister's office did not respond when asked if Modi would be travelling to Johannesburg for the August 22-24 summit of leaders from a bloc that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already decided that he will be a virtual participant.
China and Russia are keen to discuss expansion of BRICS at the summit, while India has reservations about that idea.

๐ท๐บ๐ณ๐ช Russian Foreign Ministry no longer condemns the coup in Niger
Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Maria Zakharova said that Russia considers it important not to allow further degradation of the situation in Niger, which can be resolved only through national dialog.
"We trust that vigorous, mediatory efforts will be made to help the society of Niger to overcome the crisis through the African Union and sub-regional organizations. We express the hope that the people of Niger will be able to successfully overcome this difficult period in their history. We aim to further develop the whole range of mutually beneficial bilateral ties," added Zakharova.
These words indicate the U-turn in Russian rhetoric regarding the coup in Niger. This change probably reveals Russian Federation plans to support new Niger military government, like it was in the case of Mali and Burkina Faso.

The United States is set to evacuate some staff and families from its embassy in Niger after military officers seized power, a U.S. official said on Wednesday, even as the mission will remain open and senior leadership will continue working from there.
The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a final decision was still pending but it appeared likely.
"This is a prudent move in case the security situation deteriorates, and the core embassy staff will remain," the official said. The official added that the U.S. personnel would be moved out of Niger by aircraft chartered by the State Department.
