๐น๐ณ Tunisian opposition defies protest ban with rally
Hundreds of opposition supporters in Tunisia defied an official ban on their protest against the president on Sunday after some of their leaders were arrested, breaking through a police barrier in central Tunis to rally in the city's main street.
Before the protesters broke through the barrier, police warned them by loudspeaker that their demonstration was illegal but added that they would not stop them by force.
"We are here again despite the campaign of arrests targeting opposition figures. We will continue to resist to release the detainees but also to confront the coup," said a National Salvation Front leader.

๐บ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ง๐ซ๐ฌ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ท A recent article from Rolling Stone magazine has pointed out the unusual pattern of US-trained military personnel in West Africa leading and being involved with coup d'รฉtats.
As the author points out, essentially every coup leader of the past 20 years has received extensive military training in the US. This is ironic given that the coups have been against US-friendly governments, and their replacements have tended to lean pro-Russia, rather than pro-US.
Relevant US authorities in the Pentagon, the State Department and AFRICOM, despite being asked about this trend, provide no explanation.

๐ฟ๐ฆ South African president to announce cabinet reshuffle on Monday
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce changes to the national executive on Monday, presidential spokesman said.
A cabinet reshuffle has been widely expected since Ramaphosa was re-elected leader of the governing African National Congress (ANC) at a party leadership contest in December, paving the way for him to run for a second term in 2024.
Ramaphosa is expected to name a new deputy president. The new position of electricity minister is among the roles to be filled.
He announced last month he would create the position of electricity minister to help address the nation's power crisis, as state utility Eskom implements the worst power cuts on record.

The Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, has arrived in Cairo to seek Egypt's help to repair dilapidated public services such as water and electricity supplies.
Four years ago, contaminated drinking water left thousands needing hospital treatment, and frequent power cuts led to nationwide protests which toppled the government.
Al-Sudani, who assumed office last October, will also try to attract Egyptian companies to invest in Iraq after years of sanctions and terror attacks.

๐น๐ณ Tunisian president rejects racism accusation
Tunisia's president denounced racism on Sunday and pointed to possible legal consequences for perpetrators. In a statement he described the accusations of racism as a campaign against the country "from known sources".
But he added that Tunisia was honoured to be an African country and announced a relaxation of visa rules for African citizens, allowing stays of up to six months instead of three without seeking residency, and of a year for students. He said migrants who had overstayed could leave without penalty after many of those authorities sought to deport had proven unable to pay fines for late stays.
He said the crackdown on illegal migration is a campaign against human trafficking and pointed to a law passed in 2018 against discrimination to say that any verbal or physical attacks on foreigners would be prosecuted.

๐ช๐น Tigray rebels deny forming interim government
Ethiopia's Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) rebels have denied establishing a transitional administration in the northern region in accordance with the peace agreement signed in November last year.
TPLF spokesperson Getachew Reda said the Tigray interim administration would only be established after mutual consultations between the parties to the Pretoria agreement.
"Reports of the [transitional government] having been established in Tigray without Addisโ involvement flies in the face of reality. Tigray is only trying to do its part," Getachew said.
Major political parties in the region have been calling for an inclusive interim government to steer the region as it tries to recover from the devastating civil war.
