๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ซ Protest for "more security" after deadly attack in the east of Burkina Faso

A number of thousands of people demonstrated Wednesday in Diapaga, in eastern Burkina Faso, to demand "more security", three days after a deadly attack on a neighboring town whose death toll remains unknown.

On Sunday, suspected jihadists attacked the town of Partiaga, in this province, killing several people, according to residents and a security source. According to residents, the Burkinabe armed forces abandoned the town before the attack.

Wednesday's demonstration aims to "denounce the inaction of the authorities during the Partiaga tragedy and demand protection and more security for all," according to protesters. "We are citizens of Burkina Faso and we cannot be left at the mercy of the terrorist hordes," they added.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ท Mauritania president said they are not inviting Wagner group

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ahmed Ould Ghazouani says his government has no plans to invite mercenaries from Russia's Wagner group to help in the fight against Islamist insurgents. "It's simply not the case, we are a sovereign country and will remain so," Ghazouani told.

He also denied being approached by the Wagner group, but said he would not judge neighbouring countries with ties to the group. "We hope that these partnerships are effective and that if the aims are achieved that it is done with respect to human rights," he said.

Countries in the Sahel region, including Mauritania's neighbour Mali, are using fighters from Wagner to fight a Jihadist insurgency.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Ghana's finance ministry told that debt talks with China are "cordial and fruitful"

Ghana's finance ministry said on Thursday that a Chinese delegation had ended a three-day visit to discuss Ghana's request for the restructuring of the $1.9 billion debt it owes China.

The ministry said in a statement that the Chinese delegation came to Accra ahead of an upcoming Ghanaian mission to China and that discussions had been "highly cordial and fruitful".

China's official bilateral loans involving Ghana account for less than 5% of the Ghana's total debt, the Chinese foreign ministry said.

Ghana, which is struggling with its worst economic crisis in a generation, secured a staff-level agreement with the IMF in December for a $3 billion loan, but the money's approval is contingent on it restructuring its debt of $46.06 billion.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ผ Malawi president's ally quits over graft concerns

An adviser and key ally of Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has announced he is stepping down from his two positions due to concerns over corruption in government.

Maurice Munthali said he was quitting from his two positions as the president's special adviser on peace, reconciliation and national unity and as the spokesman for the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

In two separate letters, he said he was resigning from the positions after deeply and prayerfully reflecting on his role in a โ€œgovernance atmosphere marred by persistent corruption allegations and scandalsโ€.

Previously, Munthali accused the MCP of failing to provide โ€œthe type of leadership and direction that would meet the hopes of all Malawians for a better lifeโ€.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ Journalists freed as Egypt releases more detainees

A member of the Egypt's presidential pardon committee says 33 detainees have been released. Member of parliament Tarek Elawady listed the names of those released on his Facebook page.

On the same day, the UN human rights committee concluded a two-day session assessing Egypt's commitment to international conventions on political and civil rights. The committee is set to submit its notes and recommendations to the Egyptian government towards the end of its term on 24 March.

Previously, the presidential pardon committee resumed its work upon orders of the Egyptian president, who also launched at the same time a "national dialogue" which he said would include all the country's political parties, except for the banned Muslim Brotherhood group.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ Spain to extend seasonal migrant workers programme to Senegal

Spain is extending a so-called circular migration programme to its first sub-Saharan African country, bringing in at least 100 people from Senegal to work on its farms during the harvest season, a government said.

The programme, due to start in April, aims to replicate the success of a 22-year-old circular migration scheme with Morocco in which around 15,000 seasonal workers are brought in to work each year in Spain's agricultural sector for a limited time before returning home.

Spain uses circular migration programmes to curb illegal migration while plugging labour shortages in its key agriculture sector.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น Police quash parallel Adwa Victory Day celebrations in Ethiopia

Tensions remain in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, after police targeted civilians who held parallel celebrations to mark Adwa Victory Day on Thursday.

A statement by the government communications office blamed individuals who, it said, wanted to โ€œcreate disturbancesโ€.

The day marks victory over Italian invaders in the famous Battle of Adwa in 1896 by the army of Emperor Menelik II, the founder of modern-day Ethiopia.

Police fired tear gas inside a historical Orthodox Christian church where some people had sought refuge after hundreds of people were dispersed from a city square named after Menelik II.

Several people who sustained injuries were reportedly admitted to hospitals. Opposition party said one of its members was killed by police.
