Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday called on President Joe Biden to rescind a nearly $1 billion arms sale to Nigeria following reports on an illegal abortion program and the targeted killing of children carried out by the Nigerian military.
Both members of the subcommittee on Africa, also called for a review of security assistance and cooperation programs in Nigeria, including a risk assessment of civilian casualties and abuses resulting from the arms assistance.
"Therefore, we believe continuing to move forward with the nearly $1 billion arms sale would be highly inappropriate and we urge the Administration to rescind it," the lawmakers said in the letter.

China's embassy in DRC said on Friday it was shocked by the state auditor's report, calling it "full of prejudice" and not corresponding to reality.
President Felix Tshisekedi's government has been revisiting the deal struck by his predecessor under which Sinohydro Corp and China Railway Group Limited agreed to build roads and hospitals in exchange for a 68% stake in Sicomines, a cobalt and copper joint venture with Congo's state mining company Gecamines.
The Chinese investors committed to spending $3 billion on infrastructure projects, but the state auditor demanded that commitment be increased to $20 billion to reflect the value of the mining concessions that Gecamines contributed to the deal.

Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of supporters of Senegal opposition leader Ousmane Sonko on Thursday after he left court in the capital Dakar where hearings are underway in a libel case against him.
The demonstrations are the sign of unrest Senegal, where elections next year could pit Sonko against President Macky Sall, if the president seeks a third term.
Sall, 61, has not ruled out running in the election which the government said on Thursday would take place on February 25, 2024. Sonko supporters and some opposition leaders say the libel case - and another legal action - are attempts to discredit a popular rival.

Fighters from Democratic Republic of Congo's M23 rebel group killed at least 20 men and raped scores of women and girls in the east in November, Amnesty International said in a report. Amnesty said its findings were based on research conducted on the ground in M23-occupied territory.
The reported death toll was much lower than estimates from the United Nations, which said in December the rebels executed at least 131 people in reprisal killings in a campaign of murder, rape and looting in Kishishe and Bambo villages.
M23 spokesperson dismissed the report. "There were no serious investigations because they did not come to the field," he told, adding that none of his soldiers would commit rape.
