๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ผ DR Congo expels Rwandan officers from regional force

The military in the Democratic Republic of Congo says it has expelled Rwandan soldiers attached to the command of the East African Community Regional Force based in the eastern town of Goma.

The Rwandan soldiers were expelled from the force โ€œfor security reasonsโ€ and โ€œhave already left Congolese soilโ€, the military said.

The regional force consists of soldiers from several East African countries who have joined the Congolese army, with the support of UN peacekeepers, in fighting rebel groups in eastern DR Congo.

The Congolese army claimed that Rwanda had in response recalled all its officers from DR Congo, but the authorities in Rwanda have denied the claim.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ South Africa reports safest year in mining

South Africa is coming off its safest year on record in mining, with accident-related deaths falling to 49 from 74 the previous year, a government report showed. A total of 1,946 serious injuries were reported in 2022, down from 2,123 a year earlier.

"We are improving in fatalities, we are improving in injuries, but the numbers remain high. An incident is a pointer that there was a potential fatality," Mining Minister said during the report's release.

Mine fatalities have declined since 309 lives were lost in 1999, though 2020 and 2021 saw deaths rise again, industry data shows.

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช Kenya's inflation slows further to 9.0%

Kenya's inflation slowed to 9.0% year-on-year in January from 9.1% a month earlier, the statistics office said.

It is the third straight month that Kenya's inflation has fallen. It hit 9.6% in October, its highest level since May 2017. January's inflation is still above the government's preferred band of 2.5%-7.5%.

On Monday, the central bank held its benchmark lending rate steady at 8.75%, saying its last rate hike in November was still working its way through the economy.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ณ Tunisian president commented the record low turnout at elections

Tunisian president Kais Saied commented the record low turnout in the second round of Tunisian parliamentary elections.

"The turnout has not been announced definitively, but it has to be interpreted in a different way. Ninety percent did not vote because the parliament does not represent anything for them", said President Saied.

At nearly 90%, it was the highest level of abstention since the 2011 revolution. The low turnout is due to the unanimous boycott of the elections by the opposition parties, but also by a lack of interest in politics by a population focused on the deteriorating economic conditions with high inflation and recurrent shortages of basic goods.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Germany considers early withdrawal of German troops from the UN mission in Mali

Germany announced that it is considering the early withdrawal of its troops from Mali. "Under current conditions, they cannot fulfill their UN mandate," German Defense Minister said.

"If our soldiers cannot leave the base or can only move in a small radius around it because the drones cannot fly, they are not fulfilling their mandate. And then the mission is a waste of money and time," he added.

In November 2022, Germany said it would withdraw its troops from the UN peacekeeping force in Mali by May 2024.
